| 771008 | 2009-05-04 12:53:00 | Hi all, I'm an online gamer and having a smooth running pc with high frame rate is important to me. I've just got a new setup, it seems to give me smoother gameplay except for some random cpu spike lag! every two minutes or so the whole computer will glitch for about half a second, i dont notice this when doing general desktop things but only seems to happen when I'm in game. At the moment I've only tested it on Counter-Strike: Source which is the main game I play... I have a dual monitor setup and had the performance window open at the same time and noticed that there is a significant drop in CPU usage when the 'cpu spike lag' occurs. here is a jpeg Attached file: cpulag.JPG (www.imagef1.net.nz) (92 KB) as you can only cs:s only uses one core for some reason, and there is an anti-spike when the lag occurs. this did not happen on my old setup, is there a way i can stop this? current setup: Win XP Pro SP2 32bit Intel Core2 Quad 2.33 4GB DDR2 1066 8800GT previous setup: Win XP Pro SP2 32bit AMD 5200+ 2.6 Dual Core 4GB DDR2 800 same 8800GT I've noticed a slight FPS boost with the current setup but this spike is REALLY annoying. Will try on other games soon. |

| 771010 | 2009-05-04 13:56:00 | Try graphics card drivers. Whats your new Mobo? I had a friend with a similar issue, turned out it was a known fault with his motherboard (Random I know, I'll try and find more details, but its the honest truth) |

I will try an earlier graphics driver |

| 771015 | 2009-05-05 01:40:00 | I tried the latest drivers, no change. I now have ctfmon running as I just intalled office 2007. I have DDR2 1066 Ram and just found out that my motherboard only supports 1066 if it is overclocked. could this perhaps be the problem? " Support for DDR2 1066(O.C.)/800/667 MHz memory modules " |

So game performance matters to you but what you did was change CPUs. Rather than Graphics which is the single most important component in a PC for gaming. |

| 771017 | 2009-05-05 02:40:00 | the game I play (Counter-Strike: Source) Relies more on processing power as well as the GPU (you still need a decent one however). I have noticed an fps boost with the new cpu. Another reason i went Quad core was I work a lot with multiple virtual images open. If I was going to play the latest games then perhaps I'd upgrade my gpu. I wasn't getting this problem with my previous setup where I was using the same graphics card. Cheers |
