770636 2009-05-03 07:47:00 Well after reading dozens of reviews and the general consensus on here I decided to ditch my PC-Cillin (which expires in a couple of weeks) and replace it with Eset Smart Security (Nod32 security suite),

My computer has never ever been so unstable, it locks up all the time and if I make the mistake of running a "smart scan" the whole system will lockup at some point in the scan and the only way to get out of it is to hit the reset button on the computer, seriously I have seen machines running Nortons that are more stable. (and I left the machine 24 hrs to see if it would break out un-hang itself but it didn't)

I wanted to change from PCCillin because i have had to reinstall it half a dozen times in the last couple of years when problems cropped up, but I am now starting to think maybe thats better than average for security suites.

I had a look at the Wilders security forum and see I am not alone, is that normal for a security suite to be so buggy.

770637 2009-05-03 07:56:00 I only updated from V# to V$ earlier this week and it is still as stable as it's always been. Never misses a beat uses hardly any resources. I rarely even know it's there unless I try and install new software then I get the usual firewall popup. It really is a polished peice of software for me anyway. I would wait and see what the techs like Wainui say gary67 (56)
770638 2009-05-03 08:10:00 I think you have answered your own question

If PC Cillin was damaged in the past, unless you removed every single trace of it from the PC by either reformatting the PC or uninstalling and then going through all the locations it may be,( Folders) AND going through the registry and manually removing every single entry, which there will be MANY - then any other security package will more than likely conflict.

I've had Eset ESS do similar BUT each and every time its been because of left over other security packages trying to "hang on" and wont remove and/or damage to the system caused by the other software packages.

As its been mentioned in another post regarding Nortons - when you uninstall it, even with their uninstaller it leaves lots of reg entries. PC Cillin, McAfee the whole lot do the same thing - leave behind files and many reg entries.( even nod does it)

I wouldn't go blaming Eset when its probable that its the other software done damage in the first place. If you are trying to use a Security package on a possible damaged system you cant blaming the new software as the cause of the problem.

770639 2009-05-03 08:13:00 Hmmm. Well I downloaded 4 too. And while I don't know about unstable as such I've definetly been having some weird issues since.

It whinges that I only have SP1 every now and then, other times it shuts up.

Its done some weird things with my mail client.

I've been thinking of going back to 3.

Never had any issues with it at all.

I've been thinking of going back to 3. Is the Computer fully up to date with all the MS updates ?

The reason I ask is my own media center - ESS 4 Complains its out of date SOMETIMES and needs attention - which it is, theres a few security updates that need to come through as well as SP3 - But I'm waiting to find time to reinstall it since it was 4 years ago I did the original install and I know there are some damaged programs from previous "plays" ;)

770643 2009-05-03 09:10:00 Download PC Cillin, install it again and then remove all traces of it with Revo Uninstaller.

As WT said, leftovers are probably conflicting with Eset.

770644 2009-05-04 00:36:00 Apparently ESET doesn't like google maps. i have been unable to access the maps for a couple of days, disabled the eset firewall and hey presto it all works.

Yes there could potentially be bits of trend micro on my system conflicting, however most of the problems i have been having, other people are also having and from the looks of it a number of them have upgraded from eset v3,
I have run

Scanning the registry shows nothing left behind that comes from Trend Micro, there appear to be no processes running related to it, so i am fairly sure it wouldn't be a factor

770645 2009-05-04 02:38:00 Apparently ESET doesn't like google maps Thats because you may be in Automatic mode in the Firewall - if you installed using the default setting you need to change to Interactive mode .

Before condoning the software - lets actually set it up correctly and learn how to use it . Most people say software is crap or doesn't work because they have not learnt to use it fully .

IF you are having problems with V4 upgrading from V3 - download Revo uninstaller (http://www . revouninstaller . com/) - I use the portable version - doesn't need installing .

Run it, select Eset - Uninstall - select Advanced mode in the window that pops up - this will run Esets Uninstaller - when finished click NO when asked about rebooting - select Next in revo - remove all reg keys, next - remove all folders - Reboot the PC, install ESS again from fresh . ( make sure you have your user name / Password)

When installing - Select Custom Install ( from memory 3rd or 4th window) - look carefully you need to set the filtering to Interactive mode - the default is Automatic .

Once installed - open the ESS window - bottom left corner - click on "Display mode" change to Advanced, agree to any prompts .

Click on the Setup Icon on the Left / Personal firewall - to the right look at the firewall mode, it should be INTERACTIVE - if its Automatic click on the link below to change to interactive .

What this will do is when a program wants Internet access, like Google maps, it will prompt you, put a tick in the box to remember action and click Allow - this will happen for a few days till all your programs have been allowed -then settle down and you wont be prompted again until theres a change in the program, Eg: IE7 upgrading to IE8 .

IF you are on a LAN you will also have to set the firewall to allow all traffic from other PC's through - but thats another answer in this thread .

There are many options in ESS - this is only the tip of the ice berg .

Sorry I cant post pictures as I normally would - Image F1 is still down - says its Migrating :(
