601566 2007-10-17 02:30:00 Yep, the rest goes on dealing with Maori crime, their prison population and the 45% of new mothers that make up the DPB figures.

14% of the population makes up 45% (and increasing) of the prisons, almost half of welfare dependents and God-only-knows what else.

Presume the recipients of the Treaty Settlements will be returning the necessary funds back to the taxpayer ( or as you eloquently refer to: the Government ) to meet these costs?

WOW, now that is out there buddy..you have some large ones!

pretty close to the mark though I'd say!

601567 2007-10-17 07:12:00 For anyone interested in the erosion of civil liberties in NZ:

Subject: Police militancy affects non-violent advocates of environmental social change across NZ
To: G-unit <cthulhu_valdermar@yahoo.com>

Hi,
This is issue is of particular relevance to the Save Happy Valley Coalition. While this campaign is strictly non-violent in philosophy, the collateral effects of "counter-Terrorism" police raiding has already led to intimidation of Non-Violent environmental activists by police officers in their own homes. The following email gives links to Christchurch and New Zealand community responses, demonstrations and discussion of this most concerning matter. www.Indymedia.org.nz will have regular updates on this issue.

regards,
Graham

These aggressive raids are an attempt to criminalize dissent and smear critics of government and corporate policies with the terrorist label. This is both appalling and ridiculous.

Every great movement for peace, workers rights, social justice or environmental sustainability in our history has organized civil disobedience or other illegal protest to make its point, from Parihaka to the 1951 Lockout, from the anti-nuclear campaign, to the GE Free
movement. Every one of these movements organized actions which could be branded a terrorist under the current legislation.

The left must unite to defend the democratic right to protest and dissent.

We must throw the terrorist label back in the faces of the politicians who voted for these US-inspired laws, whilst supporting Bush's terrorist war in Afghanistan, while trading with the terrorist dictatorship in Burma.

Police raid houses across Aotearoa under anti-terrorism legislation, at least a dozen arrests
15 Oct 2007

by AIMC
Early this morning there were simultaneous raids across the North
Island, in Auckland , Whakatane, Wellington, Ruatoki, and Hamilton. Later in the morning, Police came to at least four houses in Christchurch . Around a dozen people have been arrested so far, and reports are that up to 60 are being sought for questioning.

The raids were under the Suppression Of Terrorism Act and the Firearms
Act. They have been targetted at people involved in the Tino
Rangatiratanga, Peace and Environmental movements.

This feature will be updated as more information comes to hand - please
post information in the comments if you have it. Stay safe everyone!

TV3 footage of the raid on 128, the Wellington activist community
centre, can be viewed at www.scoop.co.nz/multimedia/tv/2303.html

Updates

1:43pm - The people arrested in Wellington will apparently appear in
court at 2:15pm, and word is that cops will be opposing bail. It is not yet
known what charges have been laid. Tame Iti will face arms charges in the
Rotorua District Court this afternoon.

3:13pm - The four Wellington arrestees are still waiting to be heard in
court, but we have recieved information that they are being charged
with possession of firearms and ammunition at some point in the past.

601570 2007-10-17 08:00:00 I hope they can pin something on Tāme Iti.
Maybe another tattoo.
He discharged a shot gun in a fashion which would have got virtually anyone else a heavy charge and been disallowed from owning firearms again but what happens to him? Nothing.

601572 2007-10-17 08:27:00 That might be true if the crap we're talking about (the misdeeds of the Crown) were minor transgressions - but they're not. The Crown wrongs that give rise to most Maori grievances were acts of sheer greed carried out with the most two-faced dishonesty that it boggles the mind that these things lay unaddressed for so long.

The government rules not just by the vote that got it into power - but by the concept of honour. This is one of the most important legs that supports a democratic mandate. Anybody can discern that when an honourable person commits a wrong they apologise and make amends. It is the same for government.
You carry on as if they were a bunch of choir boys before the pakeha got here and that they didn't keep slaves, confiscate land or eat their enemies.

601573 2007-10-17 08:35:00 Amends have not been made over and over again. Each settlement has been full and final.

It is the Crown that has made amends. That is, the Governor General in Counsel (cabinet). So it isn't you, me or us. It's the Crown recognising the inheritance of a problem that their forbears caused - and acting to fix it.
What crap you talk. There is a plot of land Tauranga way which has had three full and final payments to two different tribes.
When the crown makes amends whose money do you think they are doing it with.
Land was taken away for repatriation for returned soldiers. I haven't heard any of those who lost land bleating about it lately. It is time everyone stopped living in the past.

601575 2007-10-17 09:02:00 There is a Potato Farm Treaty?

There is no JUSTICE anyway in my view . There are laws . Do 51 kph in a 50 kph area you can be done .

There is a Waitangi Treaty in New Zealand . I did not sign this treaty and also the person named Tame iti is not so tame as well . [sic] I might add if I was really upset about the terms and conditions I would not have signed it off as the Tuhoe tribe did not .

May I ask which translation of the Treaty of Waitangi have you read and interpreted? How did you interpret the version (s) you have read?

The Maorii in New Zealand are tribal and can not even agree among tribes .

We, in this forum, can't agree as to what to buy for RAM, CPU, and assorted other cards .

Anyone wandering about with illegal weapons should not be out on bail and I note that Tame Iti is not at this point . Bail has been refused .

And back to square one .

No person has been found guilty yet . Let us wait for the evidence .

I try to keep an open mind .
