601546 2007-10-16 08:09:00 OK. Dean F. Should I go to Ireland and reclaim a potato farm at some stage?

There is a Potato Farm Treaty?

601547 2007-10-16 08:16:00 Don't know about the other crowd you mention, but Maoris don't seem to want to get over it whilst the industry is so lucrative.

If there is an industry then a lot of the Crown historians that make submissions to the Waitangi Tribunal are part of it too.

As far as "lucrative" goes - well... One of the largest settlements to date - the Ngai Tahu settlement - involved about $600 million. Only about $110 million of that was cash. But the more conservative estimates of what Ngai Tahu lost through the Crown failure to honour the "tenths" deal, is around $20 billion.

So, that means that the beneficiaries of the most lucrative outcomes of the wrongs against Ngai Tahu are the Europeans.

These people in Europe......How do they get the money?

anyhow, There is no doubt that the industry that has evolved around the grievance settlements costs billions of dollars to run, and that many many fellow New Zealanders are making a living off it. And thats excluding the monies paid as settlement.

Perhaps they then spend the comfort money on fine goods from Europe and thats how these Europeans get their hands on the money?

"So, that means that the beneficiaries of the most lucrative outcomes of the wrongs against Ngai Tahu have not been Ngai Tahu."

Are you suggesting it doesn't cost a fortune?,which is the point.

It's hardly the point. It is used as an argument against the Treaty industry (and there certainly is one).

But those that bring this argument in almost all cases know very little indeed about either the history of the colonisation or any detail whatsoever about even a few of the grievances.

What the government spends on Waitangi Tribunal expenses is a tiny fraction of the Budget. And any settlement needs to come out of the approximately $600-800 million that is discretionary in any Annual Budget.

What is your definition of "fortune"?
There's a big difference between millions and billions.

I've read that the average annual cost to taxpayers is c. $10 each.
