771150 2009-05-05 11:20:00 Yeah I heard a bit about that, but theoretically there shouldn't be *that* much of a difference

Sigh. Have you actually tried before you give the advice?

771151 2009-05-05 11:28:00 I'd just go for 64-bit. No point in installing both -- they are the same software :)

But what applications work better?

Most software is not 64 bit capable anyway.

Just thought I would try and see what happens.

This before I have a guess and give advice.

There are 32 bit drivers and 64 bit drivers. Some may be better than others for example.

No, I haven't properly tried with W7 64bit yet, but in Vista 64 bit there is not very much of a difference. In fact, I don't even notice a speed difference!

771153 2009-05-05 11:45:00 Downloading now! Don't use FF, though, as it doesn't work (at least not here). 9 min for 10%. linw (53)
771154 2009-05-05 11:52:00 And dont forget to install java, or it wont work either. I found that out after testing x64. Forgot to install it, an error message kept appearing Speedy Gonzales (78)

771156 2009-05-05 21:26:00 Downloaded Windows 7 RC (32bit) last night.
It installed fine and seems to be a nice looking os.
I loaded a few programs (some worked some didn't) Looks like I would need to upgrade a lot of my existing software to use W7.
Unfortunately when I tried my favorite online game, the graphics quality was crap and speed of response slowed dramatically!
That was it for me, I put XP Pro back on and will stick with XP until I win lotto and can afford an upgrade.
Was an interesting experiment though:)

771157 2009-05-05 21:43:00 I've been using Win7 x64 RC since the technet release of it about a week ago, and it's been fantastic. So far the only app I've found that doesn't work properly is Comodo Firewall. Everything else I have including various Office suits (OOo, MSOffice, Lotus etc) work brilliantly, all the major AV apps I've tried work correctly, full driver support for all the hardware (including things like a G15 keyboard). So from a business / application point of view it seems great. Performs better than I ever had with Win XP Pro 32-bit which I was running until recently.

As for gaming.. couldn't be a better upgrade. Again, everything I have on that front runs perfectly, and in most cases better than it did under XP Pro. That's a range of games from diverse genres, like the original Half-Life, Total Annihilation, all Source-engined games, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War 2, Far Cry 2, Crysis, Vanguard etc as well as browser-based games like Puzzle Pirates and MyBrute.

Overall, very happy with how Win7 x64 RC is working out for me from all aspects.

771158 2009-05-05 22:48:00 People should install Windows 7 as a dual boot option, so they don't have to reinstall the old OS if they don't like 7. Is there anyone in Nelson who could get me a copy of the 32bit RC please? sammo450 (13626)
