771084 2009-05-05 01:31:00 So could it be that telecom have slowed down the broadband speed throught the router?
Isn't that what happens when you exceed your broadband limit?
In some cases yes thats true - depends on what type off account you have.
Edited: But didn't you say its been canceled ?

The Mother inlaw has ADSL via Xtra, and if they go over the limit they dont lose any speed, just get charged extra for the excess over.

"Normally" - if you are on dial up you would go Wall Socket>line Port On Dial Up Modem.

What Foxy said is true you can do sharing, BUT without actually seeing it, or being sure exactly how it is setup; Personally I'd be only guessing.

771087 2009-05-05 08:35:00 I wouldn't advise the Nod update viewer - it not legit nod software. and when you click on some of the download links - well picture says a thousand Words (www.imagef1.net.nz) wainuitech (129)
771088 2009-05-05 11:40:00 The rapidshare link is fine.

Not sure about the legality of the program however.

771089 2009-05-06 02:32:00 Just been speaking to the NZ distributors - there is a way to download the Updates and burn to CD then install on another PC - he talked me through the settings :waughh: Just downloaded the updates, all 23MB of them for ESS.

Theres a CATCH - you HAVE to have a Business class License to do it.

With the License comes another code that has to be entered into the settings. Then you can download the Def files Heres what they look like (www.imagef1.net.nz) - these are burnt to CD - then on ANY version of Nod, you change the update locations to point to the CD - and it updates from there, then change it back to update from the Internet.

I know the pain - been to 3 peoples places this week - dial up and needed full updates Awhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh:crying

771090 2009-05-06 03:36:00 Wow people still have snail-up? eww :X

As to the setup in question, unless it's a router plugged in to an external dial-up modem (and I am yet to see a consumer-grade dialup modem with an ethernet interface), then it's broadband. Perhaps the "router" you're referring to is just an external dial-up modem rather than an actual broadband router?

If it actually is a broadband router, and happens to be one with dial-up backup connectivity, then that's way overcomplicated IF it's only for a single PC. In which case, the above suggestion of taking the router out of the equation and just using the PC's own modem would simplify things.

That said, there may be keep-alive / timeout settings in the router if it is such a rare-case setup.

Why would you go from broadband to dial-up? :X

771091 2009-05-06 21:05:00 Hey guys,
Many thanks for all the input, really appreciate it.
Would you believe that while I have been investigating all the options here and elsewhere, the bloody thing finally did the updates??!! So she is all good to go now.

quote - Why would you go from broadband to dial-up?
Its a financial decision on her part.
