770646 2009-05-04 06:51:00 Is the Computer fully up to date with all the MS updates ?

Hell no.
But I've cured Nod. Told it to shut up about Windows.
All has been happy since.

770649 2009-05-04 08:04:00 Before condoning the software - lets actually set it up correctly and learn how to use it. Most people say software is crap or doesn't work because they have not learnt to use it fully.

I have been on the ESET site and have been reading through various tutorials most seem to be for version 3 (infact from the forums I have been reading a number of people are having issues with version 4 and are going back to version 3 especially if they are, like me, vista users although for others it works fine),
at a minimum I would expect security software to be usable and not crash the system everytime it is run in the default settings or at least have a log file - the possible solution to this crashing is to change the scan type so that it doesn't scan all file types (kb.eset.com), but that seems a bit pathetic as a solution, and before you say it does have a log file, thats only true if the scan completes, or you can turn the hung scan off via the task manager, which you can't when the eset scan hangs absolutley nothing works it just sits there, and you have to restart the computer which wipes the scan

As for the firewall yes OK, but it seems monumentally stupid that the default setting doesn't tell you that it's blocking something, if when using PCCillin i go to somewhere that is blocked it tells me, rather than timing out which seems a damn site more sensible.

770651 2009-05-04 10:06:00 Whats written are all valid points, going from my own experience, I still stand by what I mentioned in post #3, a LOT of the problems are caused by damage to the system caused by the other software.

I can honestly say I have had the same thing happen on my own XP PCs last year, and that was because I KNEW the system was damaged, but had no time to reinstall it - had it have been a customers PC I wouldn't have hesitated - but thats being paid work.

I have seen Nod with problems BUT it was system file damage, once the OS was reinstalled and all their programs put back fresh, all data scanned for any infections - every thing runs sweet as, no problems.

So far as of today - out of the 693 licenses I have sold since May 05 - only two people have complained about having problems afterwards * see Note -

Nod keep blocking the Porn sites he was going to
The person turned it off because they were on dial up and didn't like it slowing down the speed when it updated the virus definitions.
well Dhurrrrr :groan:

Note: Afterwards meaning once I had repaired the system either from previous damage/infections or from a fresh install OR the system was not damaged in the first place. This is from Windows 98 -> Vista.

but it seems monumentally stupid that the default setting doesn't tell you that it's blocking something All Security software works differently - its a catch 22 - some people like to be advised others dont, It doesn't matter what the manufactures do, default settings wont please every one - BUT Like I mentioned earlier on, ESS does advice, in interactive mode, which relates back to learning how to use the program ( thats any program, not just Nod) - By reading the manuals - I bet you now know more than you did before.

BTW - if you go into the all Programs /Eset/Smart Security - there is a very in depth documentation/ Help file there.

Why your PC is having Problems - from a guess and from what I know about the problems I would say there are damaged files - hence the problem.

450+ licenses since March 2008, two issues as well. Well the 2nd one doesn't really count.

Both have been customer installs. One didn't uninstall Nortons first, the other ended up having a failing hard drive, and with the installation of NOD and the subsequent removal of over 400 threats, in conjunction with the failing HDD caused windows to die in a rather interesting manner, starting with a temporary profile being created, and all the system drivers going missing.

One new HDD and a reinstall later, all was peachy. :D

Eset v.4 likes windows to be up to date, some of us here have differing opinions on the merits of this, I personally think it's good.

Damn useful tool

If only it worked in Vista....:o

Most of the stuff can be done manually in cmd but integrating it all in a nice simple gui makes it a great utility
