600663 2007-10-12 00:51:00 Well they should if they are trying to lessen power consumption.
People are more likely to have more than one computer at home but not many people would have more than one big screen TV.

Remember, too, that people often leave computers running all the time, even if they are not being used, whereas most sensible people turn TVs off when they are not being used.

600664 2007-10-12 00:52:00 As much as I don't like the idea of banning big screen TVs, I guess we have to value the govt's efforts to be a green country. If their plans prove to be a success in the few years to come, NZ will be a world-leader in terms of being a green and cleaner country, wouldn't it?

The greener and cleaner our place are, the better for NZ's natural aspects. That will surely attract a wallop of tourists from all around the world.

Who will have to watch TV on a 2" screen.

According to the manual for the 47" LCD I have here it uses 295W when on and 0.6W on standby.
What sort of power consumtion do they want to ban from?

The article in The Press in ChaCha this am was referring to large Plasma screens rather than LCD (or CRT) as being the main problems in power usage. According to the Australian tests, all but four of the twenty odd plasma sets tested "would be eliminated". The stats given in the article say that the average monthly cost of running a 50inch TV is $17, compared with $10 for a modern family fridge.

It also says that the consumption of a large plasma TV is roughly double that of all the home electronics in an average household just five or so years ago.

Unfortunately the article doesn't give any details about the power consumption so you could compare it with a computer.

600668 2007-10-12 04:09:00 The Plasma TV's are (in many cases) nothing short of a room heater (that you simply don't need going in the summer).

LCD are quite economical by comparison.

Note that only Plasma are implicated in the article, this is one reason why I would not have one, as a choice against LCD. You can even feel the heat radiated from the screen. Some display units in the stores actually have a "warning-hot surface" sign on them, for good reason.

In the winter, the heat is not "wasted" but will suppliment the room heating.

600669 2007-10-12 04:11:00 How much does a 29" crt cost to run? Must be heaps more than the plasmas. wotz (335)
600670 2007-10-12 09:05:00 The world is full of politically correct F/wits trying to tell the rest of us lower order mortals what we should do, say and think - well intentioned greenies can be amongst the worst.
If one wishes to discourage use cost is the best way. NZ electricity is extremely costly compared to Australia, so wastage is already being discouraged by cost.
I am sick of being lectured on waste by government, when they are amongst the most wasteful. One can drive through any city at night and see empty office blocks fully lit up.

Not at all. CRT's consume a lot less power then plasma and lcd

Really? I thought plasma and crt were about the same. LCD was bit less.
