599768 2007-10-10 02:25:00 Software often is zoned so you can't sell certain versions outside of certain regions. Most of the Microsoft software you buy in NZ will have stamped on it "Not for sale outside of the Asia Pacific Region".

In terms of where you can get it cheapest, you should try and get an OEM copy from somewhere that is willing to sell it with a mouse, or something along those lines.
That last paragraph is 100% wrong. The OEM versions of any windows OS clearly states on the box {quote from OEM Licence}Each individual software licence inside this package may ONLY be distributed with a fully assembled computer system{end}

Many people think simply buying a piece of hardware allows OEM sales :groan: NOPE! Any shop that sells you OEM without the correct hardware CAN get fined BIG TIME by Microsoft if they decide to. They are risking the whole business to make a "cheap sale". I know of one place that is now closed, but they were warned "once only" and could have copped over $10,000 in fines for selling OEM incorrectly.

How some places sell OEM software by is Selling hardware the computer cannot run without.

A computer will run without the following components
Mouse, Keyboard, Monitor, Floppy, Optical Drive, Modem.
Makes it damn hard to work on of course. Unless its a server, one of my servers is completely headless, meaning no mouse/keyboard or monitor, its accessed VIA the LAN - original setup had those items but once up and running all removed.

599769 2007-10-10 02:32:00 Do Ascent sell OEM software separately without the need to purchase a piece of hardware like a mainboard?

If they do they are risking fines.

Well they have OEM software listed on their site and doesn't say anything about needing to purchase a PC as well...

599772 2007-10-10 03:25:00 Think yourself lucky they don't ship here - otherwise you'll be wasting your money on a pos "software"

But seriously, who am I to say. Like someone else said, just get an OEM version from TM or a pc shop in NZ.

ha damn ha - Nope from Microsoft, who else.
Heres what happened to the company I said before thats now closed, about 5 1/2 years ago.
MS got told by someone who "narked" on them, and to see if it was true a MS rep simply walked into the store as a every day customer and purchased some OEM software with no hardware.
Soon after they recieved a "warning Letter" stating what had happened and what would happen if they got caught again.

As I said - any business that sells OEM software without following the Licence agreements that you have to agree to from MS, are leaving them selves open to have huge fines.
Lots of people think the Licence agreement is a big joke - not so funny if you get fined thousands.
May be OK for the customer - not for the company.

Just like pirating music from filesharing programs - the person overseas on the news a few nights back - fined almost $222,000 US for downloading music - bet shes not laughing. See Here (www.cbc.ca)

Enough said.

Well I got an OEM copy of XP Home with 1GB of RAM (both were for different people anyway) in the same order, but I did get a whole PC a week before ordering XP and the RAM and XP was to go onto this PC, so... Thats how many shops sell OEM. It used to be written that you had to purchase hardware the Computer wont run without - a Computer wont run without RAM, nothing ever said that the RAM had to be going in the same PC as the Software, and can never have to much RAM any way.
The OEM "laws" have been relaxed but sellers still go to know what they are doing.

Personally - I don't really give a rats behind about retail prices( apart from when I'm selling). Looking at some shops, their prices still have big markups, others far more reasonable.(knowing what they would have paid for it wholesale)
Sometimes MS give people who are in the business and attend the roadshows free copies of Vista or Office 07, thats even better.

Regarding getting Vista from the USA, the same applies in reverse, Windows Home Server was available here in NZ several weeks before the states,(17th Aug) it was not being shippped from NZ to USA, it has only just become available in the USA.
