771140 2009-05-05 02:35:00 I intend to get the W7 RC version when it's available tomorrow (or later)

Have any of the techs here tried it yet and should there be any issues ie: Special Windows 7 drivers required?
I have all my XP drivers saved but will they work in same pc with same hardware and '7' instead of 'XP'?
Thanks for any help:)

771141 2009-05-05 03:33:00 Most drivers you can get from the manufacturers page and run in compatibility mode, but most work straight off anyways.

Other stuff should be PnP probably.

Its same as the W7 beta really, just "refined" and with new features. Windows 7 is really just a rebuilt vista(same kernel IIRC) so stuff should work fine with it

771142 2009-05-05 03:37:00 Windows 7 has built-in support for most standard devices, and most major manufacturers have provided up-to-date Windows 7 drivers for both x86 and x64 editions. If there are not such drivers for a particular device, use the relevant (x86 or x64) Vista drivers. inphinity (7274)
771143 2009-05-05 08:18:00 Currently I use Win XP Pro 64 bit and had a dual boot with Win7 64 Beta.
I removed the dual boot for win 7 in order to install Win 7 RC1

I have a 64 bit AMD Processor and have downloaded Win 7 32 bit and also Win 7 64 bit both RC1.

My new thought is to do a reformat and install both versions of Win 7 in dual boot. Remove Win XP Pro beforehand of course.

I can recover. Test the two operating systems with all applications I use.

Any thoughts?

771144 2009-05-05 09:20:00 I'm not very sure about this, but doesn't 64bit W7 have a 32bit emulation layer, therefore programs should work fine? Its juts drivers really isn't it?

I do not know which is why I asked.

Yes, but there is apparently an issue of performance (www.w7forums.com). A friend of mine is currently running 32-bit applications on a 64-bit Vista installation, and they work fine - it's just drivers which were a nightmare to find.

Yeah I heard a bit about that, but theoretically there shouldn't be *that* much of a difference

My friend certainly hasn't noticed any difference - apart from the fact that he can see his whole 8GB of RAM. I'm still on 32-bit so don't have any personal experience to share on the topic.

I'd just go for 64-bit. No point in installing both -- they are the same software :)
