770897 2009-05-04 07:23:00 Im really new to ubuntu!

Ive dualbooted ubuntu and xp on a 60gig laptop drive (xp40gig, ubuntu 20gig)

Ive decided to make more of a full switch to ubuntu so want to change the partitions around. Ive taken 20gig of the xp install and created that as a new partition but i cant figure out how to merge the current ubuntu partition and the new one.

I'm using gparted, apparently I shoud be able to mount the new partition under the ubuntu one but I can't do anything with it except format, resize and delete.

Any ideas how? Ive read a few linux forums about it but being new to linux it confuses me

770898 2009-05-04 07:38:00 Did you install it using wubi or the old way in a separate partition as they are different? gary67 (56)
770899 2009-05-04 07:50:00 ah i just installed it from the cd burnt and it asked i selected install as dualboot

770900 2009-05-04 08:17:00 Well wubi installs inside windows sort of a bit like a VM, so have a look in C drive for a ubuntu folder gary67 (56)
770901 2009-05-04 08:28:00 i did a full search of c drive and nothing showed... hueybot3000 (3646)
770902 2009-05-04 08:57:00 H'm maybe you will need to delete the ubuntu partition and try again as it will ask you what size partition you want on installation, or you could try this (http://www.partition-tool.com/) gary67 (56)
770903 2009-05-04 09:03:00 He obviously did not use Wubi as he has a seperate partition for Ubuntu...

You can't merge the partitions within ubuntu-you'd need to unmount the partition with ubuntu on it. Try doing it with gparted live CD.

Edit:Install Gary's program in Windows and try that too, would probs work

770905 2009-05-04 11:37:00 right well i gave it a go but got grub error 17

i think il just have to reinstall, not that thats an issue, ubuntu installs are easy!

770906 2009-05-04 11:39:00 Grub error 17 doesn't need a full reinstall - you need to redo the MBR. It's just got a bit confused about what you did to the disk layout and it's not sure where to find the rest of its files.

Use grub-install to fix it.
