Does anyone know of a site which lets you search laptops by feature?
I'm looking to get a laptop with low power usage (so I can leave it on 24/7 to do download large files, occasionally convert video files overnight and also have long battery life when I'm away from power), be powerful enough to decode HD h264 content (when plugged in of course!), multimedia outputs (hdmi, dvi, spdif) and be portable.

Low power usage suggests either a netbook or a low voltage core 2 duo (but needing to decode h264 probably discounts a netbook). Because it would be a coupled with a low voltage processor, I'm expecting there will only be integrated graphics here, am I right? Discrete graphics chip would be nice though.

I'm wanting to use it primarily as a portable computer, but also be able to plug it into my tv at home to either stream media files from a server, or play media files from a disc. It doesn't need to have a remote.

The 'closest' I can find is the HP 2530p ($3834) and 2730p ($4259), but they only have a mono speaker (!) and no DVI/HDMI/spdif. But they fit the bill when it comes to long battery life, powerful processor and are rugged and portable. Anyone know if there is a notebook out there like the HP but have hdmi/spdif and -stereo- speakers?

Looks like the ASUS A6Jx, A7Jx and A8Jx, and W1J have either DVI or HDMI on them

Just how much porn are you planning to download?

Not necessary, some laptops have both IGP and dedicated graphics card available where you can easily switch between these two display modes depending on your use. There is a Toshiba laptop that has an nVidia 9300 graphics card and an IGP.

And err... the general consensus is to stick with Asus or Toshiba, though Dell is okay.

Cheers :)
