771600 2009-05-07 01:10:00 Hi
I'm looking at getting a notebook pc soon, but it seems very few feature DVI out and have VGA instead. Why is this? If people really needed vga, they could use one of the many converters they have from their video card upgrades...

771601 2009-05-07 01:40:00 If you want DVI why dont you buy a laptop with one.

I would guess 98.5% of people will not have a converter.

771602 2009-05-07 01:45:00 Yeah it seems a bit backward to me aswell, however its not hard to find laptops that have HDMI out now. wratterus (105)
771603 2009-05-07 01:48:00 There were a few laptops that had DVI but not many and they were at the top end of the price range for laptops.
A lot now have HDMI and VGA.
You don't see any flat screen TVs with DVI either

771604 2009-05-07 01:51:00 A lot of (mostly older now, but hey) monitors, projectors etc don't have DVI in, but pretty much all the ones that do, also have VGA, so I guess notebook manufacturers want to have the broadest compatibility possible without having to have multiple outputs. inphinity (7274)
771605 2009-05-07 02:33:00 Indeed, most laptops' DVI ports have been substituted with HDMI ports e.g. Asus M51T

Cheers :)

771606 2009-05-07 03:16:00 HDMI is essentially the same thing as DVI, just with a different plug and extra audio pins - hence the lack of a DVI port. Just get an HDMI --> DVI converter, they should be pretty cheap. Erayd (23)
