It looks like NZ's tax burden as it is doesn't make much of a difference to the economy or standard of living. So don't let those filthy, lying politicians tell you any different come the elections. NZ is preceeded by, and followed by, countries that are wealthier and poorer either way.

If I am not mistaken, most of the countries that preceed NZ are more socialist than those that follow.

602810 2007-10-18 11:22:00 I find NZ tax and GST a bit too high

Whenever I think about work and how much I earn.I look around and I say to myself.hmm

Broadband is getting cheaper but when?
Mobile pricing is still very expensive

I earn so and so amount of money .The government takes 33% of your income tax if you earn over 38k and you pay 19% if you earn 0-38k

So if you are indeed rich and you earn over 30k the government takes nearly half of your income so you will never actually have enough money to buy the things that you might like.

My friend said to me.You won't get rich in nz but you won't go poor in nz either. You will just have enough to live.

602811 2007-10-18 17:36:00 But it seems the world-wide trend is towards lower income tax rates.

If Cullen had reduced our rates and thresholds a little bit each budget he had a surplus we would be in a good position now, and he needed have worried about it causing more inflation than a big drop.

Not as politically wise as building massive surpluses up until election year, then offering "huge" tax cuts as an election bribe.

602814 2007-10-19 03:59:00 When ever there is discusions about Government expenditure, or giving taxpayers rebates per medium if adjusting thresh holds and tax rates, the argument is raised ,"That will c0ost the Government $x"
The fact of the matter is that the Government has no money "IT IS THE PEOPLES MONEY" that they have contributed through taxes, and a Government really has no right to take more of the peoples money than necessary - Unfortunately Socialist governments see this differently, and are prepared to tax as much as they can get away with.

How do you define necessary when you say "no right to take more......than necessary".

The Government is, even though you may strongly disagree, elected by the people to look after the affairs of the people as a whole. The Government then is the people.

That's the best laugh I've had for weeks. This Gov looks after the affairs of the people??

602818 2007-10-19 06:33:00 So, at $38k you pay 33% tax.

But it is more than that isn't it.

Factor in Gst...Acc levy... Tax on interest on Savings... & all the other taxes that we pay one way or another.

Would one of our mathematical members work that out?

So I earn $38,000 -33% = $25,460.
-12.5% = $22,277
etc

If you see what I mean. PJ
