602037 2007-10-16 04:59:00 Right, I'm in the market for a new Mp3 player, Advice sought from all experts and non-experts alike, Including those who sell them.

That doesn't include Apple fanboys.

Alright, The requirements

Must Haves

Must be fully functional without the need of any additional software. This is the biggest issue.

Prefer under $200
FM Tuner (that works well)
at least 2GB
Built strong
Small
Good battery life.

Prefer to have but not deal breakers

Screen
rechargeable battery

Any real user experience would be handy, The $99 jobbies at DSE are probably a contender unless someone has some negative feedback on them.

Supplied head phones are a non-event as they will be getting thrown out with the packaging.

602038 2007-10-16 05:20:00 I've known a few people who bought the cheap DSE mp3 players lately, and all of them had to be returned. Greven (91)
602039 2007-10-16 05:26:00 You could probably try a Creative Muvo or Zen in that case since I think they come with most of the stuff your looking for. According to reports they sound great.

Only catch is that most accessories on the market cater for the rather large iPod contingent.

I am sure that Apple will survive without your custom, Metla.

602040 2007-10-16 05:35:00 WMG, Just out of interest, and against my better judgment,In your esteemed opinion What accessories would be so important that to not be able to get it for a certain MP3 player would be an issue?

Remembering I'm not gay, and if I want to listen to music without headphones then I would use my Stereo or my PC.

602041 2007-10-16 05:55:00 Uh...those FM tuners for one. How many decent MP3 players come with built in FM radios these days? (No seriously, tell me)

And lets not forget accessories to connect to your car stereo...if you have one.

But then again, since when are accessories vital? They're not. Hence the name accessory. But without them, you're either paying big bucks for a "complete player" or paying for something half decent that you've never heard of before and ends up being crap.

And when does having an accessory speaker make you gay? Does that mean all MP3 players with built in speakers are gay? Or if you buy one, you're gay?

In your case, irrespective of sexual connotation, probably nothing if your not looking for any add ons. I would imagine that all you will be using will be a standard MP3 to stereo cable to connect.

In Metla's "esteemed" opinion, any person who has an ounce of design or creative flair in their soul or who might wish wear or use something that is well designed or looks half way decent is considered gay.

602046 2007-10-16 06:15:00 Be wary of the thin DSE ones. I've had my mums one replaced already after it just stopped working.

And the plastic 'screen' cracks quite easily.
