601822 2007-10-15 15:48:00 Seems that there's been not just a few people who state that SOMEHOW M$ has changed the Automatic Updates criteria on computers to automatically download and install updates even though the user has not allowed that.

Here's a couple of things to see:

601823 2007-10-15 17:29:00 Seems its only an issue with Vista.

I used to download XP updates regularly but now don't bother at all. Last year I read one of the big guns here on PF1 - Speedy or PCTek or whoever - say that with a good firewall (not M$) and good AV (not Nortons!), Window$ updates are not needed. Oh yeah, forget the new Windows Media Player.

prayer to the universal spirit: please oh god, do not let wmg  intrude once again in yet another thread like a used car salesman pushing pushing pushing which only repulses repulses repulses us

Speedys view is that you should ensure your computer is fully updated re: MS updates
I wouldn't say not needed. Remember, MS updates also include bug fixes, driver updates, and as you state, sotware upgrades

Why? It's colour works well with my Vista skin, and have found no problems at all (except for it crashing because of overloading the entire PC, and disabled my plugins).

Yes it would have been me.
I'm not against manual downloads of a specific bug fix for something.
Most updates are for IE patching.
Drivers would be the last thing I'd want from MS - thats something you get from the manufacturer. Remember the infamous modem driver MS screwup?

And none of my own PCs have ever had nor needed a MS update.
Of course they all have 3rd party security and working drivers from the manufacturers site.......

601827 2007-10-15 21:06:00 Well, its really up to you, whether you WANT to keep up to date with updates.

You dont HAVE to. Its your computer.

BUT, it'll be your loss, NOONE else's if your system decides to go AWOL.

Just DON'T install P2P programs. If you dont know what you're doing.

Then you wont have to install 10,000 firewalls. Or AV programs.

And as pctek said, NEVER install drivers from the WU site.

Hey Speed . . . . .

. . . . . . . . remember the bad time I had trying to run my Win2000 tv card?

It worked just great with the Windows wizard doing it all, and then I got the great big idea to dump the card, physically remove it and reboot and then re-install it just to get the "better" drivers from the factory .

I had heard that I was sadly missing some really great utilities by using the card with just the WU drivers .

Wrong-o!

After that . . I had to wait until I did a fdisk and re-install of XP a year later to get it running again .

OK . . . . that time I was patient . . . but the fact that the WU drivers worked and the factory site had bad drivers really amazed me .

Now . . . I know that not all installs are bad or good and that every puter reacts differently . . but I thought that was particularly interesting . . no?
