602077 2007-10-16 15:34:00 Sandisk Sansa c240...I bought one...love it

Good things:

FM Tuner and on-the-fly FM recording
It starts as 1 gig but I added a Micro SD 2g to it; the c250 is a 2gig though.
Earbuds also act as FM antenna
Has small screen for pixs/album art, but I consider that icing on the cake as I don't really care for that part anyway.
Adjustable time of and brightness of screen illumination.
Personally adjustable graphic equalizer with some presets
Onboard format command (this is really important!)
Shuffle, repeat and Clear GoList options
18 languages supported
FM Tuner presets allowed...up to 5 I think
Open mic recording instantly available for "notes" dictation and instant ideas you want to save.
External volume control for output to line or earbuds.
"Hold" mode to keep accidental turning on or off in pocket.
Rechargeable in USB or aux charger...replaceable (propitiatory) batteries too for spares when you can't get to a charger/usb
Externally available port for SD Micro card.
I have about 1200 MP3s in it so far.
Recording/playback time is about 15 hours on one charge.
Recharges in about 15 minutes on USB cable

Bad things so far:

NO covers or case protectors available yet.
Very small..so small I had to add a short lanyard to it...I didn't like the over-your-head strap thing anyway.
FM Reception is a little directional on very weak stations and you have to leave the earbuds installed to receive signal too.

All in all..I got it at a loss-leader at Wal-Mart for $49.95 + the SD Micro.

The regular price is $79.95.

602080 2007-10-16 19:01:00 I'm not up to date on the current range of Archos but I bought one some years ago and its still going strong.
You can even get spare parts from a guy in the States and there's a Yahoo group with lots of useful tips and info.

602082 2007-10-16 21:18:00 I have a Sony NWE016FB 4GB player. They are now $179.95 from Sony Shop or online. If you can handle ATRAC format (which I personally like) they are a great little player with a big sound

If you hate ATRAC and just want to drag 'n drop MP3's, their latest range would be good - the 4GB model (NWZS616FB) is $239.95 and has video/photo screen.

I watched the report this morning on TV1 Breakfast of the new ipod touch models. Very nice but very expensive. Also, I only want a music player not all the gadgets. I also listen to music in bed as I have a few health problems and wake up a lot in the night. The Sony I own has buttons so I can do anything without having to light it up to see where to press.

You might want to wait for a comparable product to come out from the competition and see what price break they go for before you call the iPod Touch expensive.

As for ATRAC, that codec should have died years ago.

602084 2007-10-17 00:17:00 Yeah, ATRAC is poos. wratterus (105)
602085 2007-10-17 03:00:00 Yeah, ATRAC is poos.

I don't know what wmg said as I have him blocked and am not particularly interested in what he thinks...

That said, I find ATRAC compression is fine with real good quality, especially at 352 k lossless.. I have compared this with my daughters ipod and the sound quality on my Sony is better than the same music on her ipod. Headphones etc. probably have a bearing on this. But, I know what I like and what is good and what is bad, as far as my old ears let me!!

As for the ATRAC software, transfer and ease of use. That is poos!! You certainly got that part right in my book.

ATRAC might be good but it wasn't good enough to make it into the mainstream. Apple does Apple Lossless, AAC up to 320kbps, MP3, WAV.

Sony make some great gear and probably could have done a great job with their MP3 players earlier on if they had bought and easy to use bit of software out to complement the music players instead of their difficult to use "Sound Stage" and proprietary ATRAC format which only worked on Sony gear. - AAC works on any player that supports the codec, its only the AAC from the music store that has the DRM that won't.

That is partly why Sony got beaten by Apple and is very unlikely that they will beat them in the future.
