601862 2007-10-18 03:20:00 Anyway . . the docs here gave me an anesthesia that causes amnesia . . and I argued that I hadn't had the procedure and they most assuredly told me that I had .

Been there, done that, have no memories! It is pentathol that they use, or they do here, commonly known as the truth drug . You are fully conscious during the op because apparently they need your cooperation and my Doc told me that they can't shut some people up . The things they must hear!

The worst part is the preparation (the drinking to hose down and flush clean the job site) followed closely by the embarrassment of the racket you make when you come out of it because you are pumped full of air, and not only is it painful, it also has to be released in the traditionally noisy fashion .

We won't go into haemorrhoidectomies, the prep isn't so bad but the aftermath ain't fun . Talk about eye of a needle!

Cheers

601863 2007-10-18 20:36:00 I wonder if anybody remembers a particular NZ designed computer. This was introduced to our school in the 1980s and was apparently some sort of co-operation with the government and others!
It was all in one - a hideous plastic housing with the monitor in its usual position and if my memory serves me right two arms thrusting forward to hold the keyboard - but where the computer components were defeats me now.
It was clumsy and had that sort of "It's the last thing I would want to own" look about it.
The quoted price was way above the Apples we were using and nobody seemed interested. I suppose it died a well deserved death.
But I would love a photo of the thing and more details if anybody can produce them.
Tom

Well I have actually managed to find something about the "POLY" as it was called. It cost $8000 against the Apple $2000 (who also reduced the price of theirs to $1200 and were forced by the government to increase it back to $2000 plus.)
Not only was it hideous (my view!) but outdated and was targeted at schools and educational institutes. It was set up for networking - but the software would cost hundreds of thousands. Really it had no chance and I am surprised it sold any.
But I haven't been able to find any photographs - I would like to see if it really was as unattractive as I remember it.

ahh.. the ol' POLY's.
I recall at the age of 14 when my college got these in (1979?).
Us geeky guys stopped hanging out in the library and started hanging out in the computer room at lunch times instead.

After we clocked "Pirate Adventure", a text based game (in colour no less!), there wasn't much else to do on it. So I asked for the manual ("BASIC") and began messing around with peeks n pokes and got a playable robot maze game running (based on my fav arcade game of the time.. 'Bezerk').
Computer teacher ended up asking me to lock up at night when he left, lol.

This all helped me launch my IT career a couple years later (selling Vic 20's, C64's) and well, still going strong 25 years later ;)

mmm.. thanks for the memories.

I'm pretty sure I used to play that Pirate game at school in the 80's or something similar at least. Our boats were always named after Chase corp, Omni Corp and Equity Corp.

I read that story . . and that's gotta be one of the SADDEST things I ever read . . . computer-wise, that is . Somebody got a manila envelope packed full of NZD's I think .

But it's right up there with Big Blue smothering Commodore too with lawsuits to harass, defame and denigrate them outta business .

Thanks very much for the link. I enjoyed reading the article and the photo helped clear up my memory of the beast. It really was an ugly so and so.
The ones we saw were were light beige colour so I presume they were the later development. Still incredibly undesirable. Reading about the weight brought back the memory of me trying to shift one - they really were awkward.
