Word of warning if you end up with Logitech X-230 speakers. The subwoofer can get a bit overwhelming.
Sorry I forgot to quote.

Set the base a little lower than you think it should be; it may take several attempts to get it right. It takes me 2 or 3 usually.:)

772253 2009-05-08 22:09:00 I have Klipsch PC speakers which cost about, 4 years ago $400. Klipsch are a American high end HI FI speaker manufacturer. They have 2 satallite speakers which have a midrange speaker and tweeter plus a sub-woofer.

Yes the type of sound card you have well make a differance and also the mother board.
I upgraded my PC last year but kept the same soundcard Sound Blaster Audgy2 ZS and speakers but found the sound sounded completely differant.

772254 2009-05-09 07:40:00 I just bought the Logitech X530, apart from the fact im scared to death whether the subwoofer is going to kill my HDD (its about 60cm away) but the sound quality is fantastic. Sir Prospect (14735)
772255 2009-05-09 21:21:00 I got Altec Lansing VS3251 Speakers for one PC here. They seem to have great sound but take up a heap of Desktop Space. Bantu (52)

772257 2009-05-10 07:44:00 I have some TDK S40 speakers that are fine for basic PC sound. Far better than the original cheapies I had. Also have Logitech X-530, but they have been swiped for the TV/XBox 360 setup. Grimy (3041)
772258 2009-05-10 08:26:00 i got an old modular power amp which i scored from my old school (excuse the pun) considering its age its 25W/p-ch fully transistorised none of that integrated circuit crap. and according to reviews it is quite a quality amp considering its size and price range of the day williamF (115)
772259 2009-05-10 23:46:00 Onboard sound tends to be ok now; they are a lot better than the old days. I'm using logitech z-5500D with onboard.

If you are going to spend money on speakers, theres not that much harm in going the whole way since it means you will -never- need to replace them with something better, for example I've heard high end speakers from the 80's which sound much better than speakers today.

The z5500D has integrated spdif decoding so you can also plug in a dvd player and it will decode the surround sound for you. As others have mentioned, the bass can get a bit heavy, but it can be turned down.
