Probably.

What I was planning was NetBSD/FreeBSD with Fluxbox, Opera, AbiWord, Skype, Gimp and mplayer, and a few other bits and pieces such as xpdf. It all works OK on a 600MHz, 128Mb, 20Gb machine. These retail for no more than $50. In many cases these can be had for free.
