(That was a hint) and Google search the web (not just NZ) it is third with "Aluminium powder"

Well I don't know if it's illegal but why should it be? It's used in making paints but hopefully someone can tell us :) It is also used for making other things which are most likely illegal.

603129 2007-10-19 22:39:00 I swear I'm making paint...honest! Or can you make it yourself at home? Anyone know how to do that? Thanks everybody! mlp (12595)
603130 2007-10-19 23:16:00 In one of my previous lives; in the chemical industry aluminium powder was also available in a paste form for incorporation into paint recipes thus avoiding possible health and those "other " problems and was supplied by aluminium manufacturing companies who could put in contact with a retail supplier bonzo29 (2348)
603131 2007-10-20 00:43:00 Blowing up creative letterboxes might seem like a hilarious stunt at the time - for those who do it.

My neighbour, however, suffered an enormous amount of stress over it last year. She was only just starting the long recovery from a head injury and was devastated by it.

One of my daughter's friends nearly lost an eye and has facial scarring from homemade ones.

My husband - an industrial chemist no less! - came very close to major damage years ago. The beard grew back but no one has seen what's under it since.

603132 2007-10-20 00:44:00 No MLP you cannot make it yourself at home. Bonzo29 is quite correct in that it is usually only available in paste form. Unless you are a registered and approved company you can get small quantities in the powder form but they have to be handled under very strict conditions to avoid static build up (many common powders will explode given the right conditions) and the results are not nice. Saw a lab expriment many tears ago to get the point accross. Remember that ship in the Falklands war with the Al superstructure? Once Al begins to burn it's almost impossible to put out.
As far as I am aware you cannot buy even very small amounts of Al powder and paste is normally only supplied in bulk containers. Unless you know of any friendly paint technichian I think you are stuffed. In any case you would only get the stuff in paste form. By the way there are two forms and many grades of the AL paste and you need to know which one you want for your particular purpose.

603135 2007-10-20 00:57:00 You know to be honest all I want to do is to make a little thermite to see what it's like - I don't want to make explosives or anything like that (I don't even know how:p). But I was thinking maybe aluminium foil in coffee grinder? Or dissolve aluminium in HCl to form AlCl3 then displace it using Mg? Hopefully you would get small particles of Al that have formed and then all we need to do is filter it with filter paper. Would that work do you think? :illogical mlp (12595)

Jerk.

Go and play on the motorway without a car instead. Then you won't hurt anyone else.

So technically you just want to get a fast small, controlled burn - not an actual explosion? That's alright then, I guess....

:help:
