Like most I guess, I seem to have a thousand Usernames and Passwords for various things ranging from utilities to banks, to ISP's etc etc.

And my page of A4 listing them all is getting a bit full. On both sides.

I've Googled for these things, but before I start d/loading and experimenting does anyone here have any recommendations/warnings for a bit of software that I can keep on my puter, and I can file my A4 page away somewhere if I can't access the PC?

Cheers all.

602563 2007-10-17 22:02:00 I don't like software app password managers. Don't fully trust them. I do something similar to this guy (posting on Slashdot):

Becoming tired of remembering passwords, I wrote a little perl program to randomly generate a matrix like this:

a-E9 b-?p c-&m
d-6K e-aY f-eP
g-!S h-gn i-D=
j-Hd k-vw l-Cb
m-W5 n-4$ o-R3
p-x% q-7M r-NF
s-+2 t-s* u-Ay
v-fL w-zG x-Zu
y-cX z-Qr

I then print this, laminate it, and put it in my wallet (a backup copy somewhere isn't a bad idea either). Then, for every password I just remember a word (maybe "bank" for my bank for example) which gives me a password of: ?pE94$vw

Hard to guess, easy for me to "remember". If someone gets my paper (say I lose my wallet), it is still not simple to figure out what my passwords are, or even what the heck that little paper is. Shoulder surfing doesn't work too well either, unless you can memorize the whole card and then figure out which word I am using (it would be easier to try to watch me type the password on the keyboard then get it off the paper. Luckily I type fast and get annoyed when people stand over me while I type a password :-) ).

Link is here (it.slashdot.org).

Simple and effective.

You can...but I'm quite happy with Opera.

Think I'm looking for summat a little quicker to use.

I could just bang 'em into a Word doc and save it...but where's the fun in that?? Boys gotta have their toys!

There must be a little app I can d/load that stores passwords etc.

Likewise.
I just keep my hundreds of them in my head.
If you use them regularly you don't forget them.

I'm not sure why you need a password manager if you are using Opera though as the Wand saves all your passwords for you. If you are like me and choose not to be automatically logged into forums, etc, just use CTRL+Enter or click on the Wand shortcut icon to have Opera log you in, provided you saved the password when you first logged in. I expect you know all that though. :)

What I do is keep my "less important" passwords, eg forum login details, hidden within one of my Cardfile files and also write them into a Little Black Book.

Important passwords such as for banking are committed to memory, NEVER saved in Opera, nor are they written down anywhere.

Hey chook!

The wand thingy annoys me...and although I use Opera mostly, I often foray to the Dark Side and see what's up with I.E.

I guess thus far there is no answer to my question....I'll keep googling and see if I find anything.

602570 2007-10-18 07:17:00 I have used Roboform for the last year or so. No problems. You only have to remember one password. CliveM (6007)
