772919 2009-05-11 01:41:00 i have a 320GB (297GB formatted), 200GB (186GB formatted) and a 160GB (149GB formatted) hard drives which i want to use as one logical drive totalling 632GB, is there a more "safer" and "reliable" way than using a dynamic disk spanning? aidanmaz (7180)
772920 2009-05-11 02:00:00 I wouldnt use dynamic disks, unless youre using a server version of windows, or some kind of RAID

And once you convert it to a dynamic disk only XP Pro, 2000, and server 2003 will be able to read it. And you cant change it back to basic, unless you delete / recreate the dynamic disk / partition.

772921 2009-05-11 02:12:00 Your box sounds like a perfect candidate for WHS - it uses Drive Extender, which is basically a whizzy version of JBOD, aggregating a bunch of HDD (can be a mix of SATA & IDE too) into one big drive. nofam (9009)
772922 2009-05-11 02:22:00 i thought about whs, but i havent got the money for that at the moment, so im making do with what i have. And i am aware about dymanic disks. i do have many versions of 2003 server, my main idea is to hav a massive drive so i have a media server aidanmaz (7180)
772923 2009-05-11 02:25:00 freeNAs support JBOD...but that may be insufficient for your needs Blam (54)
772924 2009-05-11 02:34:00 freenas doesnt work on any of my current machines, only an old one thats not worth using. If i use frenas I'd hav to virtualise aidanmaz (7180)
772925 2009-05-11 03:09:00 Does your MoBo support RAID? And if so, what levels?

I'd recommend mirroring for sure - striping probably isn't necessary for a media box, but backing up all your protecting all your stored media sure is!

Why would you want to?
160Gb drive for the OS & applications
One of the other HDD's for Data, other one for Backups of data.

772927 2009-05-11 03:42:00 because i have another 40Gb HDD for the OS. If its a media server it wont have many apps aidanmaz (7180)

mobo doesnt support RAID. Mirroring is good but seems like a waste of a disk
