772823 2009-05-10 06:43:00 I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 with 4gb ram, itel quad core and ati 4850 graphics.
after downloading the latest VLC player, I opened a 4gb .mkv file on a local sata drive (7200 rpm) and the playback was jerky.
Task manager didn't show up any resource hogging.

How can I improve playback performance?

772824 2009-05-10 07:29:00 Have you got the latest graphics drivers?

Does it happen in otehr players or VLC only?

Try out Mplayer too:

772829 2009-05-10 22:44:00 To improve the playback, you might want to try using something like Media Player Classic and the CoreAVC Decoder.

The CoreAVC decoder is *the* fastest, and will probably make a real difference on any semi-underpowered hardware. Problem is it costs, but its worth the investment IMO!

The graphics card should support hardware decoding too, so I'd definitely check the drivers for it ...

What else is running in the background, CPU-wise?
What happens if you try and playback a small 720p trailer from the Apple Website?

772830 2009-05-10 23:01:00 I think the main thing you can do is NOT use vlc. Because it's platform independant it can't access the Hardware video decoders. Unless the link up above gives you access to that, i'd recommend going to

By being an mkv file, I'm picking it's holding h.264 video. Try PowerDVD 8 trial and see what results you get from that.

772831 2009-05-10 23:40:00 The graphics card should have hardware acceleration of h.264. But I definitely agree with using coreAVC with media player classic. VLC is really a player of last resort, not the first one you use because as you have found, it has poor performance. utopian201 (6245)
772832 2009-05-11 00:14:00 You could try XBMC? :) Chilling_Silence (9)
