772751 2009-05-10 04:59:00 Hi, I would like my grandaughter to be able to look at several web pages but not other ones. Is there software that will stop her from viewing certain web pages like You Tube or gambling and Adult web pages. I would like to be able to turn my back and allow her some freedom and knowing fair well that she can't open certain sites. any reliable ideas welcomed. ken kountryken (14110)
772752 2009-05-10 05:06:00 You can set up opendns on the computer, or even better, the router.

How old is she?

If she is tech savvy then she will be able to bypass them eventually, using proxies, or possibly tunneling techniques.

http://www.opendns.com/

Make an account and set up the DNS servers, instructions on the website

772753 2009-05-10 05:29:00 I've used this (www.anyutils.com) before to block You tube.

It works well (It modifies the windows hosts file), but you have to know all of the websites to block, as it doesn't have a list :(.

Also some Internet security suites come with parental controls built in .

772754 2009-05-10 05:45:00 You would be a lot more productive sitting with her and talking and showing rather than just blocking. I did that with my daughter when she was young now is is very computer and internet savy, she knows what to look out for in good and bad sites. Bantu (52)
772755 2009-05-10 05:56:00 Is it Vista or XP as Vista has some parental controls, not sure if they work for the internet though gary67 (56)
772756 2009-05-10 05:57:00 None of those Nanny type programs work 100%. Its like spam, hard to filter accurately.
Best to supervise in person.

772757 2009-05-10 06:11:00 Also now I think of it, Windows Live has a parental controls program that you can download if you don't have Vista. Not sure how good it is though. davidmmac (4619)

download.live.com

Has monitoring too-which is good.

Personally I think its a bad idea to "block" sites. If your kid finds out he/she'll think that you don't trust him/her. Prevention is better.

772759 2009-05-10 07:14:00 Even web proxies can bypass any filters performed at the host file level, unfortunately.

Cheers :)

There will never be anything that will completely keep the tech savvy kid out.

We have a corporate level proxy server/firewall and kids at school still find out ways to bypass it, and its not impossible either!

OpenDNS can block most proxy sites though-but not all
