772698 2009-05-10 01:52:00 Hi to all.
I am putting together a new system and the final component I need is a good internal Sata Optical burner. There seems to be an overwhelming array out there and most test reports that I have read seem to be dated early 2008 and centered around 18x burners. Now we have 22x, also some Australian reports ,eg Pioneer DVR 216 BK 20X are not available here.
I do not want to buy a lemon, or one that makes more toasters than good, or sounds like a 747 on take off. For the record I do not want a Blue Ray at this stage. It gets frustrating trying to get facts on this item. I would really appreciate all experienced input.

772699 2009-05-10 02:31:00 The current PC user mag has a big article on burning both drives and media, makes interesting reading. Personally have a Sony in my spare machine and an LG in SWMBO's machine both DVD writers and both seem good and quite gary67 (56)
772700 2009-05-10 02:53:00 Hi Gary, Is the mag you are refering to the Australian PC User. Iwill check it out. Cant say that I view it much as I usually read NZ PC World ,which is very often pretty short on reviews, the Australian PC Authority does always have an "A" list however the Optical Burner is very old and I suspect updated many times.:banana halkelorno (14145)
772701 2009-05-10 03:29:00 Why does it have to be SATA? Zippity (58)
772702 2009-05-10 04:11:00 Yes it is the Australian one, I don't get it very often but it is a superior mag they do their own operating systems based on Linux distros such as a server OS and they do have quite thorough reviews gary67 (56)
772703 2009-05-10 11:44:00 I'm a big fan of LG drives.

Can't say if it is still the case, but it used to be that it was ONLY LG that offered drives that were compatible with ALL the media.

As for drive writing speed - I'd rate this as the least important factor. Many others here recommend burning at slower speeds in order to get good burns.
I do the same myself.
Why make a coaster in 5 mins (and have to repeat the process) when you can burn a good disc in 10 mins?

Pioneer and NEC are pretty good bets in terms of burn quality.

Also burning at the slowest speed, depending on the media can actually give -worse- results than a faster speed. I usually burn about half the speed of the media. I'll post scans when I get home showing slower speed results in worse quality.
