604605 2007-10-23 17:22:00 Hi Guys

A friend of mine bought a name brand PC from a well known appliance store with Vista pre-installed on it.

I asked him where his Vista CD/DVD was, he did not have it, he phoned the store and they said that these machines do not come with one ! The OS is pre-installed on the hard drive.

This is like the situation with ME and I thought that Microsoft was forced to give CD's with new machines.

Any comment ?

Regards

604606 2007-10-23 17:44:00 Family friend just got a laptop, same situation .

So I called up Microsoft NZ who said that you need to talk to the manufacturer of the laptop (HP) about it .

Otherwise they can supply disks at $50 delivered

HP on the other hand want $175 (But that could be with the license as well) :dogeye:

So ya . . . I'm not condoning piracy . . . :annoyed:

604607 2007-10-23 17:46:00 It has been common not to get a CD/DVD for some time now.
Make an image of the pre-installed OS for backup, make sure you keep the serial for it.

604608 2007-10-23 19:03:00 I was under the impression that the DVD had all the versions on it . This was so you could upgrade, say "Home" to "Premium" and paid MS for the upgrade .

This would be a loser for MS if the disks are not supplied .

I have Vista Upgrade, but choose not to use it . When I did a clean install, I found I did not have a useable copy of MS Money, either on a disk, or like MS Works, in the "Software" file of the original hard drive image .

I rang HP and MS and each said it was the other's resposibility - Bast . . . s

That and a couple of other things reverted me to XP . Nothing wrong with Vista . I reckon my Core duo notebook handled Hi Def video editing a bit faster . Just got pissed off with MS and HP .

Probably won't buy another HP notebook because of this . Not that they will care . Customer satisfaction is not the norm these days .

604609 2007-10-23 19:19:00 I think it depends on manufacturer - Dell supplies install disks, as does Acer.

In any case, Vista install DVDs are identical regardless of version - i.e. you can use a Vista Business disk to install Vista Home Premium - the only difference is the licence key.

604610 2007-10-23 20:20:00 You only get the Windows CD, driver CDs etc with a real computer from a real computer shop.
Been that way for ages.

604612 2007-10-23 20:45:00 With the new HP laptop we get, you have to make ISO's (17 CD or 3 DVD) for images, however no Vista DVD\CD as such! SolMiester (139)
604613 2007-10-23 22:04:00 a few of the brands have the pc set to make restore cd's/dvd's when you first start it. of course most people skip that and often don't have the blank media to do it with anyway. tweak'e (69)
