603548 2007-10-20 22:16:00 Doing a clean out of my old stuff and came across this.
File is dated January 1995.

I remember paying up into the hundreds of $ per month for Internet at the time. My most expensive bill was just over $700 for the month downloading with a 14.4 modem. (I still have the bill here).

Ihug's Flat rate billing started to create some competition and did eventually bring down ICONZ's prices but they were slow to come down.

This is back using Windows 3.1 and Trumpet Winsock and a slip connection, later I changed to Chameleon winsock.

603549 2007-10-20 22:25:00 lol sounds like me.

I think the most I paid was 300 and something a mth ($2.50 IIRC an hr), when I first got on the net (With Xtra). Flat rate wasn't even around then.

Then when FR came in thats when I joined Ihug in 98.

Stayed for them for just over 9 years, and I'm now on BB.

603550 2007-10-20 22:33:00 Speaking of expensive I remember hearing that Micheal Fay paid $30,000 to get an image of KZ1 emailed from the US (big cost due to the huge file size over slow connection) winmacguy (3367)

Xtra was established 1996 . I joined ICONZ Aug 94 . ICONZ began 1992 .
I moved to Ihug Jan 1996 and am still there . Had various Dialup, Satellite and several BB plans in that time .

I was registered with about 6 Bulletin Boards prior to joining ICONZ with a 2400 modem then switching to a lightening fast 14400 modem just before joining the Internet .

Image can't have been that big if it was early 90's because Hard Drives in those days were not very big. It would have taken a few weeks to receive the email of a $30,000 image on a 14.4 modem.

Everything was routed through Waikato Uni back then. Simon Lyall used to do a FAQ on Internet ISP's at that time, there are probably remnants laying about on the net.

The copy of the FAQ I have here shows ICONZ had 22 modems in Auckland and 8 in Wellington.

603553 2007-10-20 22:55:00 Yup, I was on a few BBS's too before the net .

Even tried to run my own for a while, (running an Amiga) for mates . Running a 14 . 4 .

I think the modem is still here somewhere (A Supra external) .

603554 2007-10-20 23:05:00 My largest bill was $150hr .. extra hours $2.50 on top off Clear's 150hr package.

First was 2400bps modem going via other pple's BBS.
Then a 28k then 33k then 56k and BB last year Xmas. Got fed up with expensive slow internet so just paid it. Having said that since last yr Xmas my prices has not changed one cent. I'm on the Xnet River plan capped to $39.95 that is 6GB or something. Was initially 10GB but pulled back as I don't use that much. Didn't want contracts either so it was Xnet.

Then .. Clear's $2.50 an hour, then their flatrate then Zfree free internet then .. Clear's 150hr when Zfree stopped. Bro had Xtra $2.50 then stopped for Zfree.

Xnet BB as off last last year Boxing Day :D

603555 2007-10-20 23:06:00 I remembered the days on a 2400 modem, that we used it for emails only in TEXT but when we needed info we hadn't got our Dynalink PCI 56k modem we used the 2400 modem and it took like 30mins to open a webpage with no images loaded to get some game walkthroughs :D

Reminds me when I get my new PC, I will be back on the games. Good days always ...

My regret in IT is getting laptops for uni, I had a 486 DX4, then a P1 and P2 and P3 all bought used. Also regret no name network cards and internal dialup modems and regret a portable bubblejet printer. Should of built a PC and took to uni or get one there and built myself (maybe 1hr max) and then 2hr for software (the basics) - windows and office to get started. Gotten a used monitor at uni or shop and a cheap small footprint b/w laser printer - the quality is much better for text and the running cost much lower. I could of using a Athlon than a puny P3 laptop today .. a change of mobo and CPU and a ram stick is so much cheaper and recycle the other parts.
