603800 2007-10-23 07:07:00 Just to point out WMG demise. Leopard needs 9GB of free space to install. Vista premium requires 15GB of free space to install. One would presume once installed the OS isn't going to take up that much room.
WMG please check your facts

Leopard needs (Bearing in mind that Leopard is about 4 years ahead of Vista - it will take Microsoft that long to catch ***** with Windows 7)
# 512MB of memory
# DVD drive for installation
# 9GB of available disk space

Windows Vista Home Basic
• 800-megahertz (MHz) 32-bit (x86) processor or 800-MHz 64-bit (x64) processor
• 512 megabytes (MB) of system memory
Note On system configurations that use system memory as graphics memory, at least 448 MB of system memory must be available to the operating system after some memory is allocated for graphics.
• DirectX 9-class graphics card
• 32 MB of graphics memory
• 20-gigabyte (GB) hard disk that has 15 GB of free hard disk space
Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, and Windows Vista Ultimate
• 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)
• 40-GB hard disk that has 15 GB of free hard disk space (the 15GB of free space provides room for temporary file storage during the install or upgrade.)

and you can justify that statement how?

note that just because you need 15gb free space during the install, doesn't mean the final product will use that much space.

i do believe the figure quoted by people actually running the software was 6gb.

Wait 4 years to see how big Windows 7 is compared to Leopard.

But will Mac user still use Leopard in 4 years? (I only just started reading this thread so presumably I don't know what I'm on about)

I doubt that studios will as they tend to upgrade the OS as each new one comes out as well as getting new machines every 12 to 18 months where necessary to keep up with the work load. A lot depends on the studio. they will also update their Adobe Suites at the same time.
I would imagine that there will be home users that will still be running Tiger in 4 years as some are probably still running Panther now although some people who like to keep up to date will have moved to OS X 10.7. Steve was saying that they are now set to bring out a new OS every 18 months for the next 10 years.

603806 2007-10-23 08:43:00 I have to say here that Vista was the only reason I bought a Mac. Loving it. But it has to be said that I was surprised at how much HDD space the tiger used. You'll notice the past tense there. I looked on the net and found all the stuff I could dump, like all the various language packs asigned to each app, games, why oh why do I need Quicktime ,Safari? iTunes lives on an external drive now, as does my iphoto .Its all gone and my OS is way smaller.
Just d/l Gibbon and can't wait to try it, just burnt it to a cd...thats under 700mb...how come a bunch of full time coders in Redmond or at Apple can't do that? I think the argument that people are demanding more is a little off the mark, most of the people I know that use a comp are either idiots or just surf on it. There are also your gamers, but they surf and play,80% of whats in Windows never gets used. They should be like the Linux guys, you get the basic package, if you need more you d/l it, if you can't work out how to, ypu don't need it.

603807 2007-10-23 08:49:00 I think in either case that the manufactures need to put a certain amount of stuff their machines first to actually make the machine user friendly to the average person who doesn't know how to use a computer - there are a lot of those (the Linux setup would not be suitable for this category)
and second
to have a marketable device
the rest would be up to the likes of MS or Apple as to what makes it to the final cut - relevant or not so.

so you said something you can't prove until 4 years from now?

and that is assuming size is a sign of being "ahead"

what i mean to say is your statement was absolute rubbish
motorbyclist (188)
603809 2007-10-23 08:55:00 Well if you want current then it would be the installer size of OS X 10.4 (Tiger) compared with Vista and I would hazard a guess that Vista would still be slightly bigger (default size as opposed to after you have removed all unnecessary crap). winmacguy (3367)
