Acronis etc... clones the entire partition or whole HDD incl the many partitions where available. Ie., you don't have to reinstall windows or even take the CD out or any other softwares ....

I really like Acronis. It is so much faster too, a whole restore can take less than Windows setup let alone all the other stuff you need - software and drivers and tweaking.

I had a laptop for 6yrs no format, wasn't bad, had it while I was studying. Main issue for me was, you had to do a spring clean of bad stuff etc... Other than that, you had to be smart of what to install and what not to install, and err on the side of if you can do without it, avoid it, cos for a old computer like that it may not handle it and give you speed - therefore don't update Windows version, or Office version, don't start up all the chatting softwares if you not using them, don't install AVG virus scanner cos it hogs up resources etc etc.... If it is not fast enof then don't bother with some stuff like photography and video works but you may watch a DVD for eg.

What is the spec of the machine and what main software are you using? If you want a bit of speed, it may pay to get some RAM but a warning older RAM may be more $$ compared to what you can buy per the dollar with current gears. But having said that, if you only use it for admin work stuff, you could spend $200 for a new system - cpu, motherboard and some ram - AMD Sempron. Migrate them into your old box.

772603 2009-05-11 11:00:00 I generally quite like the basics, for the average Joe, one does not need to spend a lot of money on something or anything for that regard. I like to keeps thing OEM or factory without any decorations or upgrades on it ... if it works, it does the job, maintain so its nice and clean and goes well ..... And it cost less too. Like a PC or a car or anything else .....

I really like the admin basic PCs cos they are so cheap and does their job. I mean core parts for $200  and it looks so clean inside the case too with the all in one motherboard, no video card, one hdd maybe, one dvd drive, no floppy drive, no other cards installed other than maybe a tv card thou many people these days may favour USB ones and Wifi for that matter too.

Between we still have a laptop since 2000. Windows 2000, Office, has been prepared with Acronis. Has a multifunction printer / scanner to it, has wifi and access to our broadband router and a DVD drive :D

772604 2009-05-15 08:40:00 It all depends on how the PC gets used. I find at that the advertising departments PCs are slower than the design ones and need formatting/imaging more often.

Combination of email malware, browsing habits and user understanding of the www dangers.

I find 6months is enough to make XP slow so my documents is on D. C is just windows. Automatically installing XP helps(nlite)
