603919 2007-10-22 23:13:00 My relatives in San Diego were served their mandatory evacuation notices about 3 hours ago. God, where are those water bomber helicopters and planes? Get the National Guard involved already!

The winds at too fickle...they don't want to lose another few tankers like the last time.

The big fire last year here in the local hills killed (I think) 5 firefighters because they had no aerial support at the time.

There is a lot of conservatism right now in the fighters' squadrons.

There is a lot of yelling about San Diego too on the TV (got my aerial up again..Hrumph!)...but I understand the reluctance to lose a few aircraft.

It's getting late in the day now, and we expect a new onslaught of wind tonight. The predicted winds never showed up here today, although Orange County and San Diego got them in spades.

We expect to see almost a million acres lost in San Diego County...not the city!

Right now we have gusty and inconsistent winds that spool from any and all directions. The same troubles that the firefighters have.

Temps are OK..a little on the cool side, but liveable in shirtsleeves right now.

We have about 1 ½ hours until sunset..so here we go into the dark night again.

When I can get some of those pixs smaller and less than 13k or so, I'll post them...any ideas?

I have them all saved in Picasa...what prgm should I use to reduce the file size...and by how much?
Let me know...

I'll put them on the F1 upload site or "groups.msn.com

I have loaded some by now..they are there now.....

603920 2007-10-22 23:41:00 Well, they called in the National Guard an hour ago according to the NYT. But you're right about the winds grounding the aircraft. Hopefully the firemen from Arizona and New Mexico get there soon. Do take care. beeswax34 (63)
603921 2007-10-23 15:50:00 In what is now a larger mass evacuation of people than the Katrina incident, there are 10s of thousands people living in the Jack Murphy (Qualcom) stadium and another 10s of thousands in the Del Mar Fairgrounds .

Remember that all these fires started here about 50 hours ago!

It appears that there are 1/2 million people out of their homes and over 2,000 homes gone in all the fire areas .

FEMA has been called in and large water-dropping aircraft are flying in from Colorado now with another thousand firefighters .

Locally to me, the Orange Fairgrounds, San Bernardino, is now home for another ten thousand or so people evac'd from the local mountains and resorts .

In San Bernardino County, the Green Valley, Lake Gregory, Arrowbear Lake, Running Springs, Little Bear, Big Bear . . . all burning, burnt or about to burn and no firefighting is accomplishing anything . There is zero ( 0 ) percent containment so far . Aircraft are not permitted into this fire for the winds are really bad with massive 30,000 foot shears and thermals .

Anza is under severe fire watch, has no electricity and expects to have the electricity returned to service by Oct 31st . . . one week from today .

The Orange County fires called "Santiago" and "Trabuco" are still burning with little control . There is a very active search for the arsonist who set these fires .

Santa Clarita Valley is still burning badly . . some containment . . . but evacs are ongoing and mandatory . Bouquet Canyon is burned out . Copper Hill is closed . Paisley Center is closed . Major highway arteries are closed or closing after residents are evac'd .

The Stevenson Ranch fire area is allowed re-entry now . Fortunately no homes or life lost . This is the ONLY fire of size that has been extinguished . It was set accidentally by a construction crew moving some dirt and rocks .

The Canyon Fire= 40,000 acres, 5% controlled . 200 homes gone .

New fire in Soledad Canyon started at 8PM last night . . . and has lost a few homes so far .

The Meadow Ridge fire . . since birth at 4AM today . . . no real numbers yet .

The Magic Fire seems to be setting down and growing smaller as there are no real winds there right now .

Temecula (8 miles from here, dead South) is supposed to have had a fire just break out . . . no info yet .

Fires are merging and becoming larger conflagrations .

The Ramona Fire (San Diego County) is still burning with no containment yet .

Electricity is out in most of these areas . . . not expected to return for days or a week or more .

More than 1200 homes, 300 businesses and 200 commercial buildings have been lost in San Diego County by now .

The bigger numbers picture isn't getting told as there are just sporadic reports and numbers at this time .

Firefighters have been online for over 50 hours and have not even had time to sleep . Forces are spread so thin that sometimes firefighters don't see each other for hours at a time .

Individual teams are sent to protect single homes and keep them from burning .

The Santana winds are expected to heat up today and the high pressure system is breaking down, with an onshore flow expected in the next 36 hours to assist firefighting .

I am watching Mexican news stations from Tijuana and they seem to have the people part of the fire being shown . They show the people in the relief areas and evacuations .

The California tv stations are involved more in the firefighting and ground forces aspect . They show the aircraft and the crews on the ground .

They are calling this "The Perfect Firestorm"

15 fires active .
Less than 2% total containment, most fire are 0% contained .
San Diego area and Big Bear area are the worst losses .
Winds are slackening at the moment until the High pressure shifts more toward the Four Corners Area, where it will start the heating stage of the Santanas .

Hemet is blue sky, little or no winds and just a hint of smoke in the air .

They totally lost Green Valley Lake (I fish there a lot) and Lake Gregory (where I also fish a lot) .

The mountains are very visible and there is smoke in the mountains all around us .

Air support has just started in Running Springs with the first water drop to that area . I usually stop there for early breakfast on my way to Lake Gregory or Green Valley or Arrowbear Lake to trout fish .

They are showing the main street in front of the restaurant and the gas station right now and the people cheering for the helicopter's arrival .

More later .

603922 2007-10-23 15:55:00 Palomar Mountain is being evac'd; Chula Vista, Fallbrook, Wildcat Canyon, Escondido, are all under mandatory evacs .

100's of homes are already lost .

These fires are ringing in on Warner Springs, Sunshine Summit, Julian, Oak Grove, and these are places that I videoed on my YouTube account on my recent day trip to Mount Palomar .

This is all in San Diego County .

603923 2007-10-23 20:16:00 News: The San Diego/Chula Vista fire appears to be going to Mexico, Tijuana to be exact.

It is at the Sweetwater Resevoir and it is blowing South across the border pretty soon.

Mexico has sent some 600 firefighters and fire equipment to help in the US fires..and they might not get them back if they take war brides.

603924 2007-10-23 21:44:00 I have just seen on the morning news here in NZ about a reporter, reporting about his own house getting burnt down :( stu161204 (123)
603925 2007-10-23 22:18:00 Yeah . . . I think he was a KOGO-TV reporter from San Diego, CA .

Right now I am uploading some vids I took from my roof here in San Jacinto . . . showing the Running Springs Fire and then swinging around to the Temecula/Lake Skinner Fire .

I will post the link as soon as they let me know what it is . . . BBS . . .
