604019 2007-10-22 03:59:00 Here's the most revealing part of the article (bold text mine):

"...the main reason for using wire was its greater effectiveness in protecting most road users. "

In other words, Transit only cares about "most" road users.

Considering that motorcyclists pay more for registration of their bikes because of ACC levies, they should get equal consideration with "most" road users.

604020 2007-10-22 04:03:00 I think it’s a bit of knee-jerk reaction.

As far as I know those barriers don’t have a history of killing people, but they do have a history of saving people.

The guy was simply unlucky. Had he not been killed by the barrier he probably would have shot across the road and under the duels of a truck or hit a lamp standard? I guess his number was up.

Also, if he was doing 150km a hour, then speed had a fair bit do with it.

A sad event, but despite everyone’s efforts, the Road Toll will never be zero.

Yep, I'm trying to picture that too.
Theres the concrete things. Theres the short metal ones that tend to be on offramps etc. Impaled a car on the pointy end of one of those once.

Anyway down here the barriers consist of a thin line of paint.
You should see what carnage that causes.

604024 2007-10-22 07:57:00 One motorcyclist killed by a chain shouldnt mean the chain should be replaced. Calling it a cheese cutter is emotive bull****
What about power and telephone poles and trees which kill heaps of car drivers.
Banned in Europe is a sweeping statement does that mean Serbia, Latvia, Albania, Bulgaria Slovak republic. No it !@#$%^ dosent, it might mean a few Common Market countries
I have had heaps of bikes last was Kwaka Z900A4 bored out to 1200 dynoed out 110 hp had 3 hospital crashes.
Riding a motorbike is the most dangerous thing you legaly can do in NZ and stuff can happen. Off course motorcyclists are like Angels they dont speed , bunch up, corner hard, race each other over a range of hills, drink piss and ride.
I am a reasonable Communist if its not a one off and few more bikies get cut up then maybe they should remove the chain. If the bikie hits a crash barrier at 100 kph with a sideways component they would be toast anyway.

604025 2007-10-22 08:01:00 so you expect transit to stop using a type of barrier because they a lethal to less then 5% of motorists. If you look where they have been used, its because there was nothing there before hand and putting a conventional barrier would be out of the question.
I'm just very careful not to position myself to close to them when riding.

Gibberish.

No need for saftey devices that rip you to shreds rather then deflect you.

Put in places where they only serve to be a hazrad.

To deny things can be done better just to...actually what is your reasoning?

Seems your spouting emotive rubbish, Badguy.

You keep that in mind if you ever have a front tire blow out on you.......

They are designed to deflect cars not bikes, if you out of control at 100k on the motorway on a bike you are probaly going to meet your maker anyway.
