Who cares if Vista is big, so are modern hard drives.

I do actually. And its not just Vista, they've all gotten bigger and bigger each new one.

From the link:
First up is a streamlined microkernel codenamed MinWin, around which a re-engineered Windows line will be built.
You can forget about eye candy - the prototype microkernel doesn't even contain a graphics subsystem in its current build, so the startup screen flashed a Windows flag created with ASCII characters.

You can also forget about almost every other other creature comfort of a modern operating system. Microsoft has ditched the lot in orde to get MinWin down to the point where it takes up 25MB of hard disk space and runs in 40MB of RAM.

Now thats the O/S I'd like.

However:

While Taut stressed that MinWin was an internal-only project which "you won't see us productising, but you could imagine this being used as the basis for products in the future." He later elaborated that "we'll be using (MinWin) internally to build all the products based on Windows. It's not just the OS that's running on many laptops in this room, it's also the OS used for media centres, for servers, for small embedded devices. It's used in a lot of different ways, and this will provide the opportunity to move into a lot of different areas."

So when they are finished it sure won't be 25mb anymore..........

Pity.

603761 2007-10-21 19:02:00 And how large is Mac OSX Leopard?

9GB

I was actually pretty impressed by what Microsoft is attempting to do in the article.

My Windows Vista Ultimate install took up 6gb funnily enough...

Tiger was around 6GB I think which is roughly equivalent to Vista Ultimate size wise, although it is a much better price for everything.
The main difference being that Apple has already done what Microsoft is attempting to do when they moved from OS9 to OS X back in 1999-2001 on a smaller user base which still caused a few hiccups to a few work flows which means MS will potentially have to go down a similar path.

So after Apple did what Microsoft is attempting to do, they still end up with an OS which is apparently equivalent in function, the same size as Vista, though had its core significantly reduced in 99/01? Shows how well that worked...

It's more reassuring to me that MS is heading down the road of reducing OS bloat, while Apple happily adds an extra 3GB to the size of an OS within 18 months??

603766 2007-10-21 21:55:00 Apple ported the NeXTSTEP OS over and created OS X which is Unix based is different than the code that ran OS9. Leopard is fully POSIX certified.en.wikipedia.org
They couldn't have gone much further with OS9 and were actually looking to license WinNT from MS until they looked at what Steve Jobs was offering with his NeXT OS. I can't remember what size OS X was when it was first released although it wasn't 6GB. Tiger is actually somewhat bigger than Panther, although Leopard isn't that much bigger than Tiger.

603767 2007-10-21 22:26:00 9gb "isn't much bigger" than 6gb??

Bit like saying my laptop "isn't much bigger" than an iPhone.

603768 2007-10-21 22:52:00 Logic and facts don't work on him.

And I know it doesn't fit your reasoning, But your better off just cutting to bare face insults when it comes to WMG, But even they only work for a day or two, Then he starts posting how 9GB of Apple OS isn't bloat but 6Gb of MS OS is...

I'll leave it to the experts to do the insults - it's something I'm not particularly good at.
