603449 2007-10-23 19:36:00 DVD Shrink will rip any DVD to Hard Drive and it can also burn back to a DVD-R.

It won't do any of the fancy new protections that are on DVDs these days. Luckily we don't get too many of them in NZ.

603450 2007-10-23 20:17:00 Time for me to jump in with another similar query.
I have a recent DVD burner that seems to claim everything!
I have just a few DVD films I would like backups of - but when I tried, my computer told me I need a bigger capacity DVD disk.
I didn't know they come in different sizes. What do I look for?

DVD's come in both single layer and dual layer formats.
Single layer DVD's can hold about 4.7GB of data.
Dual layer DVD's can hold about 8.5GB of data.
All commercial movie DVD's are Dual layer discs, therefore you cannot back up a dual layer disc to a single layer disc without shrinking it (compressing) first.
Either that or backup to a dual layer DVD (which are expensive and hard to find compared to single layer discs).
