772850 2009-05-10 10:08:00 Hi I'm trying to install 'openssh-server' on my Linux machine(Ubuntu7.10). The client version comes ready installed on the OS. In some countries, I'm told the server is not legal, but surely not in NZ.
Reasons given for down load failure mention 404 and 'black list'. UK is one restricted country, but I can find nothing to confirm that my 2 computers speaking cryptically to one another is illegal in NZ. Anyone any ideas about this?...................sarum

772851 2009-05-10 10:19:00 The issues would probably be due to export restrictions on encryption algorithms (imposed by the US). However, installing an SSH server is perfectly fine - I have several, and there are many other PF1 members who have set up SSH servers in NZ without any problems. somebody (208)
772852 2009-05-10 11:34:00 The '404' error means you're trying to install a file that doesn't exist on the mirror you're downloading from.

The 'blacklist' message relates to a security flaw in older versions of the debian openssl library (which openssh-server uses), which has propogated down to ubuntu. This has long since been fixed, but you may be trying to install an out of date (and hence blacklisted) version of it.

Neither of these issues have anything to do with encryption export, and posession and use of these packages is completely legal.

Can you paste the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list here please?

772853 2009-05-14 07:37:00 I posted a reply - I thought - showing that I was unable to post the /etc list.
'command not found' I tried a number of times having copied and pasted /etc/apt/sources.list: sudo:cd: and so on. I've been a bit busy recently, so when I find time I'll try another mirror and update things before trying again.
Apologies for the loss of my earlier reply, and thanks both for your help. I'll return here in case of any comments.......sarum

772854 2009-05-14 07:44:00 Try:

cat /etc/apt/sources.list

Actually, to make it even easier add on > sources.txt - this will produce a text file in your home directory of the contents of sources.list. You don't need to use sudo for this.

Eg:

cat /etc/apt/sources.list > sources.txt

772858 2009-05-21 08:10:00 That all looks ok to me. How are you trying to install the openssh-server package?

What do you get if you run:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install openssh-server
