772465 2009-05-09 06:50:00 Hi,

I have a router and a PCI card and a PCMCIA - 2 computers.

Via cable both computers work fine.
The PCI - previous it was temperamental. But now I tried is working. In the past I have tried to uninstall the firewall and disable all wifi security. Still ..

The PCMCIA is now his turn. It has no firewall, wifi security on router was turned all off. Still the issues. It happens to connects ok but cannot open a webpage at all. Sometimes when I uninstall and reinstall it works but once you restart it doesn't work.

What is next? Maybe wipe the laptop HDD, it doesn't have anything in it, just basics. Its 9yr old. P3. Wipe it and see if wifi works? If still no, take it to a free hotspot like the airport and see if it works? If no, its the faulty wifi PCMCIA card?

The laptop was working before but recently everything jsut fell apart, all the time I used it, it would connect at 48 or 54Mbps but just didn't open any webpage. I have tried the ASUS software to re survey it and reconnect it, I have disabled router security, reconnect, yeah it reconnects all the time but webpages just doesn't work. One time I disabled all security, and reinstall the laptop card, and it worked. Then I re-enabled security and reconnect, it reconnects but then webpages don't work again. I think a day or two ago, if I didn't disable security, if I just immediately uninstall the card and reinstall and go on the web it works, but if I restart it doesn't, if I change the router security and reconnect my laptop card, again the webpage fails.

Advice?

Cheers

PS. Laptop is using ASUS software because it is running Windows 2000 therefore no wifi software by the OS.

772466 2009-05-09 06:51:00 Update while I was typing the above on the big PC my wifi card disconnected already, it did reconnect (manually) and was able to post the message above. But a quick disconnect like that ... hmm .... maybe I should take the laptop to the airport and if it works hmm... maybe it may say my router is failing??

At the moment I have no idea if it is my router or my card(s). I only have one router.

Regards.

772470 2009-05-10 22:19:00 When they connect but can't browse, are they successfully receiving DHCP information, or are you manually configuring? inphinity (7274)
772471 2009-05-10 22:33:00 A few things:
1) How far are they from the Access Point?
2) Whats the signal strength look like?
3) Do you have any cordless phones that operate at 2.4Ghz?
4) When you're "connected" if you go Start --> Run --> cmd
- Now type: ipconfig /all
- Tell us your IP Address, Gateway & DNS Server
5) Then run: ping 208.67.222.222
6) Then run: ping trademe.co.nz

Tell us the results of all this :)
