772403 2009-05-09 03:13:00 My HP Compac Presario 3000,Vista Home Basic, on booting, gives message "Configuring updates Stage 3 of 3 - 0 % complete - do not turn off your computer" and then within 30 seconds proceeds to shut itself down and then restart, with the same sequence ad infinitum.
My most recent activity before this bizarre behavior commenced was to use System Restore after experiencing some minor problems trying to download RoboForm Online.
System Restore was stated to have been successfully achieved.

I should be very grateful for any suggestions.

772405 2009-05-09 04:07:00 Try this (does the comp have an AMD CPU, this is a common problem when installing SP3 to these)

772406 2009-05-09 04:10:00 Tap F8 on startup and see if you can select "Last known Good config"

Hopefully that fixes it.

If that doesn't, boot into safe mode wih command prompt, type in "rstrui" and hit enter.

When system restore pops up restore it to an eariler time.

772409 2009-05-10 07:00:00 many thanks to you all - problem remains I am afraid. Unable to enter Command Prompt since I can't recall Administrator password ( if I ever had one) Will try to get manufacturer's default. Thanks for trying. parioli (14792)

You can use your existing account

There should be somthing like "all users" and if you click it the "Other User" option will be there, click that you can manually type in username/password
