| 604009 | 2007-10-22 02:12:00 | See story here for background: Motorcyclists are calling for wire median barriers to be removed immediately from motorways and state highways... (www.nzherald.co.nz) Motorcyclist's horrific death brings call to ban 'cheese-cutter' barriers (www.nzherald.co.nz) I certainly think they should not be put up instead of concrete. I've never liked the look of these things. |

I'm sure more people have been killed by vehicles crossing the centre line where there aren't barriers. When you're travelling at 100km/hr on a motorbike, you're screwed if you get knocked off, wire fence or not. |

| 604011 | 2007-10-22 02:23:00 | Nope. They should just have a plastic barrier put in front of them strong enough to deflect a bike rider down the road, but weak enough to let a car though to be caught by the wire rope. Reports are he was doin 150Km/h, at that speed any impact it is going to kill ya...hopefully, the alternative is to be a retarded/cripple. Its a tragedy when anyone so young dies, But hell, when ya crankin the bike you know there is a risk of dieing. Thats part of the thrill. |

And they have been banned all through Europe due to being a dangerous device. Heres a thought people, If you dont have any clue, Go read up before posting. Just this once. |

Like you say - some sort of modification would be a good idea imo. And you don't have to be going very fast for these wires to do you alot of damage. Someone could just knock you off and then, before you know it, you're mincemeat. |

| 604016 | 2007-10-22 02:37:00 | Concrete doesn't work as well as the cheese cutters on cars, There are some videos of cars hitting the cheese cutters on kiwibiker, Pretty damn impressive, Slows them down and controls them, I can see why they are used. My main problem with them is they have put them on areas where there used to be a run off, a nice soft bit of grassland, Now if you go off the corner on a bike...the safety fence kills you. |

| 604017 | 2007-10-22 02:53:00 | those wire rope barriers absorb a lot of impact by a car which helps stop it bouncing back into the traffic. however they tend to grab a bike. you only have to see the video footage of the wellington one to see that its saved many lives. at the end of the day they are CHEAP fix. around here we are waiting to see who dies from a car bouncing of the side barriers transit have put in on SH1. before cars used to go off the road, now they can bounce back into oncoming traffic :( |

It may or may not be true about the speed of the motorcyclist involved, I haven't heard/read of any confirmation from the police yet . Again I'm in agreement with Mets, as a motorcyclist I'm am very aware of the dangers when I put my helmet and gloves on self imposed or caused by others why do we need to add to that with these things |
