773545 2009-05-13 07:53:00 I am staying in a flat in Auckland that has the worst internet connection I have ever come across.
It's a DSL connection that is shared between each room in the flat.
It disconnects randomly about 6 times per day and sometimes it goes so slow that it is unusable.
Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be? Presumably a DSL connection should still go at reasonable speeds even if it is split 8 ways?

773546 2009-05-13 07:57:00 Well not necessarily. The other 7 may be downloading large porn movies.
Slow is one thing and can be caused by lots of things not necessarily even within the flat.
Disconnects, well more info would help.
Which ISP?
Which brand/model of router?
Wireless or wired?

773547 2009-05-13 09:19:00 Does it happen to all 8 of you?

I would ask your ISP for a free modem, as the the modem is probably old and incapable.

It could also be that one of your flatmates is torrenting...

However the disconnection issues could be caused by something else, bad line or overloaded router (possibly by bittorrent)

My first ADSL router (DSL-302G) would die all the time when using bittorrent and sometimes eMule

New firmware might help, but make sure your ISP checks out the line quality.
