773461 2009-05-13 03:29:00 Hi all
I have a pc here that will load windows to the point of the Windows XP logo and then blank screen and all hard drive activity stops. This happens after working fine for a few days or a few weeks.
This has happened three times now with this machine.Have re-installed three times to fix it.
I have tried repair install.
Tried FIXMBR in recovery console.
Tried CHKDSK.
Tried till blue in the face basically.First time it would get to the logo and then just sit with a blinking cursor in top left screen. The only thing that was left to me was reformat and re-install. then soon after that I got an error at startup just after windows logo of "lsass.exe object not found". I researched this and seemed to be one of two possibilties, one was a virus but pretty much rulled that out as it was just after a fresh install and the other was maybe a bad hard drive but have since done some HDD tests and all have passed.
So anyway had to reformat and install again. Now it's happened again and startup stalls in the same place just after the windows logo and then to blank screen, no flashing cursor, no anything.

Do I have a bad motherboard or HDD controller? or do I have gremlins?
Please Help!!

773462 2009-05-13 03:46:00 From what you describe :

Its possible - sounds like it is a drive - if there is a dead spot on the drive then the OS will fail each time at the same spot. could be dead or dieing sectors.

Sometimes all the tests in the world wont detect a faulty drive. Highly doubt its a board / Controller because if it were you could expect other troubles at different times / places.

What I would do is grab another HDD, and try installing on that - if it loads up and works Ok then dump the other drive.

773463 2009-05-13 03:47:00 Have you got a mate who also has a windows xp disk that you could borrow to use and see if it could be a problem with your disk? nedkelly (9059)
773464 2009-05-13 03:59:00 Am running other machines with same installation disks, so no probs there.

Its a Samsung Spinpoint 40GB bout 4 years old and I ran their diagnostic program and it came up clean. I also started spinright but gave up after 7% as it still had 15 hours to go. Spinright reported no probs upto when I aborted.
I know I should just biff it and buy new one but unfortunatley I'm slightly obsessive about fixing PC's lol. And would really like to nail it but maybe should see the writing on the wall.
Plus it's not my machine and the guy is a bit strapped for cash right now.

Easy way to tell, try another drive......

773466 2009-05-13 06:45:00 if it takes ages to check the disk surface then its usually got some bad sectors or the CRC algorithm is failing on a certain sector. dump the drive, it wont be long till it completely dies. try running a zero fill on the disk there are utilities online (Boot And Nuke, etc) if one or more sectors take a while then its dead williamF (115)
773467 2009-05-13 09:22:00 I would agree with the above comments...the drive may be dying.

Try checking the SMART status, with speedfan..

773468 2009-05-14 08:09:00 Thanks everyone for your help. Will go ahead and convince him to get new drive. Just for everyones information I ran 'Boot and Nuke' and didn't recieve any errors. stone2 (9037)
773469 2009-05-15 07:04:00 If you do a search for 'MTBF' and 'hard drive'[perhaps it was by google?], youl see that drives can pass SMART but fail straight away. Swap with a known good drive and compare. pkm (13527)
773470 2009-05-15 08:19:00 hmmmm what about multipass? try doing several passes, give the drive a real workout, i think the max is 35, or more. try the multipass (guttman/paranoid setting i think) instead of a quick erase. if the boot and nuke has trouble on sectors on one or more passes. dump the drive or use it for data you dont mind if you lose EG downloaded program installers, temporary files or swap williamF (115)
