773307 2009-05-12 06:23:00 I have decided to put All of my data files on a physical D drive in my XP PC.

Would you suggest just putting them in folders on the d drive or should I create a My Documents folder on it then have sub folders ?
Digby (677)
773308 2009-05-12 06:27:00 I just create one My_Docs and sub directories of that. BUT, you can move all the current My Documents to D drive.

I think from memory you right click the My Documents folder, choose properties, chick move and choose the destination. It takes what ever is in it to the new destination.

773309 2009-05-12 08:39:00 On my D Drive I use

My Stuff
then
sub-folders
My music
My messages
etc

Copied existing data from My documents on the C Drive. Then when was sure that all okay I deleted as necessary.

Has been working really well for a year or so !

773311 2009-05-12 09:36:00 Yep-just right click My Documents or Picutures etc>properties>location tab>Create a new folder on your new physical drive named My Documents>Move them over.

Hmmm. Very interesting. But is it possible to move the My Documents etc folders to the D drive in a way that causes all apps that routinely seek to dump their data bundles into C:\ ... My Docs etc (eg most photo downloaders) to subsequently default to the relocated folders? This would be most helpful. It would also be helpful if M$ gave you the option of doing that during Windows installation so people have a ready way of avoiding the stupid M$ default situation of stashing your data on the Windows partition!

773313 2009-05-12 11:58:00 Ho Robin. In Word 2007, click on Office Button > Word Options > Save > set the "Default File Location" to your D drive. Mine is on a different hard disk. Word will automatically go here to open files and will save to it. Anything residing on C drive you can drag over. Word 2003 had something similar..... Scouse (83)

Via Windows Explorer.
Right click and CUT MyDocuments, scroll to D:, right click and Paste it.

Don't copy, CUT and that alters all the reg settings etc so Windows and all apps know its the new location.

Simple.

773316 2009-05-12 21:43:00 Robin, it depends on the application. If the application is correctly using the My Documents location, which most apps do, it will use whatever folder you direct My Documents to. inphinity (7274)
