773088 2009-05-11 07:37:00 PC has been running sweet lately, last night did a good clean up with MBam, TRemover and CCleaner, then a full defrag using Smart Defrag.
After this was all complete I set a system restore point and went to bed.
This morning all worked good for a couple hours before a break for breakfast but when I came back to PC I found that double clicking on any desktop icons or using quick launch icons would only open the relevant "Properties" box.
Then I noticed that "System Restore" had been turned off?

Luckily I have an Acronis Image of this pc on an external and was able to be up and running again before too long but could be a problem for others if same happens to them.
I hadn't been downloading anything or surfing anywhere much apart from visits here (PressF1)

Anyone seen these sorts of problems before?

773089 2009-05-11 07:41:00 Interesting..Malware must've infected some integral system files, and removing it caused Windows to malfunction.

I've had cases where the PC doesn't boot after a malware clean, so it does happen sometimes.

773090 2009-05-11 08:51:00 it normally does that if the alt key is held down, something may have been setting the alt key tag somewhere whether it was the keyboard buffer or malware williamF (115)
773091 2009-05-11 09:25:00 That doesn't explain System Restore though.

Was it possible to access the folder through right-click > Open? Or did you not check? :p

No didn't check.
Wanted to get back online so I just went ahead with a restoration.

This was not just a folder, it was Internet Explorer and everything on desktop apart from Start button.
