606667 2007-10-30 20:10:00 This nice extract puts it quite succinctly:

"On balance, though, I now think it's perfectly reasonable to give your drives three years before you replace them. Four years is OK for penny-pinchers, and five years or more should be fine for Aunt Nora's PC that's only turned on for two hours a week".

Quoted from here (www.dansdata.com).

606668 2007-10-30 23:43:00 A wise operator will replace them 2 hours before failure (it is good to allow a bit of cushion). ;) R2x1 (4628)
606669 2007-10-30 23:45:00 What do you know. As long as you buy Seagate, 5 years is fine!! :p wratterus (105)
606670 2007-10-30 23:55:00 You replace them when/if:

They develop a fault

They become full

Thats it.

606671 2007-10-30 23:58:00 WD have a 5 year warranty too (at least on dome of their drives, don't know about the cheapest ones)

Keep a good drive until you think it is about to die, or you need a bigger drive. Replace all Maxtor drives immediately.
