605854 2007-10-27 10:16:00 Boy, I didn't know Apple's even had a blue screen of death.

Normally they just freeze on me.

Here's the bit I liked:

"We can only hope the normally smug Mac Guy is duly red-faced. After all, aren't BSODs, botched installs and kludgy fixes the stuff of the inferior OS"

The correct term for is is Kernel Panic which Macs can get occasionally but very rarely. The fact that it is happening on Leopard which is brand new is not entirely unexpected. That is also why people are advised to wait till 10.5.1 before buying it.

I've heard there are a lot of pre build copies floating around on Torrents.
I'm also seeing a lot of students in the US buying Leopard and installing it on their PCs so it will be interesting to see how Apple deals with that. It presents quite an interesting paradox even though I doubt Apple will ever license OS X out.

What are your initial impressions plod?

Great... so Vista is brand new, so it's ok that it is slow and doesn't run well on most people's existing hardware. Hell - if it crashes when people try to install it, that's ok too - it's new software.

605863 2007-10-27 18:10:00 Yeah.

The difference with Vista is that Microsoft took 5 years to copy Apple and still didn't get it right. Then you still have to wait 12 months for Vista SP1 to be released to "fix" all the issues.

Users had similar problems with 10.2,10.3 and 10.4 when they were first released. Apple had a majority of the problems in each case in the first month with the first point update.
Tiger was released only 18 months ago. Apple tends to develop in steps which are more beneficial in the long run rather than attempting great leaps which don't work out so well.

APE, short for "Application Enhancer" is a third-party app (look at com.unsanity.ape.plist - this signifies that it's an app called "APE" from unsanity.com) that has deep and potentially unsafe hooks (/hacks) into the system, to modify applications and system functions. It's not really a surprise that it screws up when an entirely new version of the OS is dropped in there in front of it (It should check this, and not load...)

unsanity.com and refer to www.unsanity.com where it is listed as "not compatible with Leopard".

That is why I recommend an "Archive and install" not an "Upgrade install". You just don't know whether your previous apps will fully work with the new system ESPECIALLY if they are hacks like this.
