773158 2009-05-12 09:06:00 I'm with Xtra, also, since approx 1996, dialup, then broadband. No issues that couldn't be fixed over the phone with their Help Desk, and even so, there were few issues, at all. Wlecome to NZ. A Team (13613)
773159 2009-05-12 09:20:00 Orcon first.
Then the rest.
Xtra and Xnet last.
Telecom have been pretty good lately according to my friends who are with them. Xnet are absolute crap these days - I would put them right down the bottom along with Kiwi Online, Woosh & Vodafone.

Orcon & Snap are both good

773160 2009-05-12 09:33:00 Telecom is great, as long as you can cope with the sh1t service:p

I've heard that Orcon is pretty good lately too.

773161 2009-05-12 10:17:00 Nothing wrong with Vodafone either just don't call the help desk, connection is good can't remember the last drop out, speed is on par with everyone else gary67 (56)
773162 2009-05-12 10:45:00 Hey lol cat listen up! The important thing is to first get a webmail for your email like Gmail is what I suggest. Then as the others previously warned watch out for the contracts being offered and don't tie yourself into too long a term. That way if you want to change ISP after a while you don't have the hassle of yet another new email address after shifting countries, know what I mean? The ISP flavour of the month can change quite rapidly, you might want to shift ISP later on. Ofthesea (14129)

You are spot-on.

773164 2009-05-12 21:20:00 Hey folks! I just wanted to thank everyone for the prompt & awesome replies! I REALLY appreciate it! :wub

From what I can see I really like the deals Orcon & Telecom have. Thanks to all who have popped in to reply!

Cheers!

Depending on where in Auckland you will be staying, will depend on what sort of internet connection you will get (you might be lucky & get ADSL2+)

But don’t expect to get anything too great as NZ internet plans aren’t the best & a lot of the ISP’s have too many people with them.

Have a look here: www.nzconnection.net and_plans (www.nzconnection.net and_plans)

Good luck!

Hi, so basically it would come down to the coverage or how far or close I am from a line exchange?

ADSL2+ sounds amazing! I'm praying I'll be in a qualifying zone for that.

You guys have some pretty good plans compared to what we have back home. We had just ONE ISP for a LONG while along with just ONE line supplier.

Thanks for the link!

Where in Auckland do you think you will stay?

Hi, I think I'm going to be staying at a place called Howick, Dannemora at a house on Skelligs Drive (not sure of the exact spelling)... :waughh:

Here's a few. Depends on how much you want to spend. Some / most of the ISP's are pretty slack in speed

Telecom (www.telecom.co.nz)Ihug (www.vodafone.co.nz)Xnet (http://www.xnet.co.nz/) arent too bad, at least you can cap yourself (with Xnet). But speeds can be slow (or should I say), can be really slow.

Only thing with most of the ISP's are they have conditions. So, I would read them, before you join them

Awesome thanks for the link! Compared to back home, you guys have some pretty decent & stable speeds. So I reckon I'll be fine - well content for now, until the gamer in me demands less lag/lower pings.

Telecom has some pretty neat packages. Think I might go with them & see if I'm zoned for ADSL2+...

Thanks for the contract heads up!

Ooh that sounds pretty good! I'd rather have good support & a moderate line than vice versa. Back home its alot like playing Russian Roulette when trying to get hold of support much less one that knows what they're doing.

Hey there! Thats a VERY good idea, thank you! :clap

Thats soo true too. Ideally I'd rather not tie myself down with a long term contract, where if I'm unhappy I'm stuck...

Ta for the advice!

773165 2009-05-13 06:31:00 Try typing your address in this (www.telecomwholesale.co.nz)tool from telecom (thanks for the link stu :)). davidmmac (4619)

As davidmmac said it might be worth putting in your new address in to www.telecomwholesale.co.nz as I am not too sure if people in Dannemora can get ADSL2+, As Broadband in Dannemora has had an interesting time since Dannemora was developed.

(Why I say that is if I remember correctly Telecom put in Fibre in Dannemora (which is not compatible with ADSL) and they had to do all sorts of changes to get in to work with ADSL )

& I don’t think people in Dannemora get that great of an ADSL service (although it has been a couple of years since I have heard about the Broadband there & things might be better there now…)

What is the story with the fibre? Does it go to the boundary of each house & go through a converter so they can use copper in the house?
