606677 2007-10-31 05:28:00 Backup every day. If you are doing something really important, backup every hour. Re-writeable disks and drives are cheap. If you are running a *nix, make sure you use fschk regularly.

Then you can afford to run the hard disks into the ground until they die. I am still using old 8GB disks. Nothing has died on me yet, nor have I lost any data whatsoever.

606678 2007-10-31 07:40:00 I replace them when they rattle too much. Give them a good shake each month just to check... gibler (49)

I'd rather have large and modern (faster) drives that are more stable and reliable than keep using old ones. One slip-up in not backing things up and the HDD blows, you're screwed.

606680 2007-10-31 09:47:00 Lmao, nursing ancient 8GB disks would have to be the silliest plan of attack I have read all day. They are well past their use by date.

Whats a 200GB worth nowadays?, $100 bucks?

You want to do hourly backups (not that you would need to unless you stole Noah's harddrive) then buy a second harddrive.

Throw that crap out.....

Nah. It has never given me trouble and neither has the backups. I use if for binary building, web & mysql server etc. Why spend $100 when it works perfectly well as it is? When it nuts out, guess what? I got another (3 actually) 8gig drives to replace it.

Actually, it is an old machine altogether doing nothing but slave working. I got it for free too.

606682 2007-10-31 20:06:00 WD have a 5 year warranty too (at least on dome of their drives, don't know about the cheapest ones)

Only the Raptors. There others are only 3 years.

I just checked out ascent & all their SATA drives have a 5 year warranty, not just the raptors. The IDE drives have a shorter warranty.
