605442 2007-10-26 17:11:00 I understand what pctek is saying but I do not buy that completly.

Surely one of the biggest costs of a mobile network is the intial capital cost of the equipment and cell towers, transmitters etc and office equipment.

That price will be the same all over the world in US dollars.

Any anyway NZ wages are lower than in most of Western Europe, the USA, Japan, Australia and about the same as say Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, so why arn't our mobile rates cheaper than theirs ?

No its just that Telecom and Vodaphone being super greedy.

605444 2007-10-26 18:02:00 Just proves that prices aren't set by the costs of manufacture/service - they're set at the highest price that the market can possibly bear. 12 cents per minute is the highest price they can get away with in Samoa.

In NZ, we're willing to pay what they charge us - so that's what they charge us...

lol, well i could point out that they'd need less capital for infrastructre per customer in samoa, but i like deane's response too....

and of course telecom/vodafone are greedy! they're required by law to make money for their shareholders, not provide reasonable prices!

605446 2007-10-27 23:41:00 Its all relative:

The statutory minimum wage for the private sector is WS$1 . 00 per hour but about 80% of the private sector employers pay a rate higher than this .

A sample of average wage rates that may be expected is given below:

OCCUPATIONAL AV . HOURLY
CATEGORY WAGE RATE
__________________________________________________ _______
Administrative & Managerial workers
(Lower Management) WS$ 5 . 04
Technical related workers e . g . fitter/turner WS$ 2 . 93
Clerical related workers WS$ 2 . 41
Sales workers WS$ 1 . 46
Production, labourers & related workers WS$ 1 . 33

WS $1 = 53c NZ

It may be relative when comparing S and NZ . However it is not relative comparing NZ with Hong Kong or Europe, which pay a lot less then us, if you compare it to what they earn .

605447 2007-10-28 00:13:00 Its not about how much we ear. Its about how much the COMPANIES earn and are willing to compete and raise a decent infrastructure.

Tuvalu has like absolutely poverty so shouldn't theirs be like 0.01 cents? And they dont even have a telephone service.

It might be a survival thing too . . . if they try to get normal rates out of Samoans, they might get angry .

I would not want a Samoan angry at me!

how expensive can it be to put string between coconut trees .

605450 2007-10-28 18:22:00 One of the two cellphone companies has 48 cell towers which give sthem 90% coverage of Samoa.

So that is 47 pieces of string !

I wonder how many cell site Telecom or Vodaphone have in NZ ? and do they use flax to connect them ?
