606538 2007-10-30 03:18:00 Last year I found an emigration record for my great-grandfather on an official Danish records website - Landsarkivet for Norrejylland.

(This one seems to be the North Jutland equivalent of our NZ National Archives)
Although I speak no Danish, I managed - by guesswork, trial & error - to enrol as a member for its occasional news emails.

Later I became frustrated that they were unintelligible, except for the few words I could guess. So I asked if they have an English version/translator, but No.
(And remembering that when I paid a fleeting visit years ago to my family's "village," the only English-speaker I found was the local Lutheran pastor, I wasn't surprised)

So I wonder if there's a forum member who understands Danish - or maybe Swedish is close enough? - who'd do me the occasional translation via Private Message?

There are so many talents on this forum that you never know until...

P.S. How similar to your version of Scandinavian is Danish, Jan?

606539 2007-10-30 03:21:00 I know a couple of people in IRC who are Danish. I'm pretty sure one would do it for you, the other might (though he does tend to get busy coding etc)

Other than that, you could try here (www.translation-guide.com)

606540 2007-10-30 03:22:00 I speak and read Danish fairly well, it's similar to Norwegian and Swedish.

I'll have a go if you want, PM or post details here.

Thanks, Jan.

I'll post today's email here, so anyone interested can see what it looks like.
(Some of the vowels have symbols above them, but it would take too long for me to find/duplicate those)

It says:

(And the next thing I need to learn is how to copy an email on to this page without typing it out in full. Another thread maybe...)

606543 2007-10-30 05:54:00 P.S. How similar to your version of Scandinavian is Danish, Jan?Laura, Scandinavian isn't actually a language. And to think there's versions of it is wrong because Finnish is totally different to the others. Greg (193)

Not much exciting stuff in there, they are saying that: The national archive is installing a new lift/elevator in one of their buildings. The lift will be used to transport all archives, meaning that information and archives around school protocols, goods-archives and church-lists will be unavailable from December 3 to 20 December.
We're sorry for any inconvenience caused to you.
