605640 2007-10-26 15:57:00 Thoughts are that M$ (losing the restrictions soon as accorded by OH SO MANY policing organizations) will go right back to harmful tactics and try to hurt the development of systems and firmware that goes against it's own interests . . even though it may not have any actual interest in the technology in the first place .

What borders on letting a rabbit guard the lettuce patch (OK . . for youse guys: letting a kangaroo guard the kiwifruit), is to let M$ loose on the world markets when it unfairly (read: with lots of $$) can cause great harm to development and inspiration to anyone creating or writing code that might be sued for infringement later on as M$ sees fit .

The 300 lb gorilla in the room has been neutered for a while by sanctions and laws pertaining to non-competitive meanness and nasty incident- and headline-making lawsuits that at best are just an exercise of "Mischievous Bullying And Ham-Fisted Might By Money" .

Here's some c/p:

" . . . . With Firefox market share rapidly climbing and major hardware vendors like Dell selling computers preloaded with Linux, it seems like present market conditions no longer provide Microsoft with the leverage it needs to impede innovation . The California group has already admitted that the efficacy of the sanctions is somewhat questionable . At this point, it seems like radically innovative business models—like those used by open-source software and Web 2 . 0 companies—are doing more to equalize competition . If the function of antitrust is to promote competition and not merely to punish companies for market dominance, then the position of the New York and California Groups seems overzealous . The decision of the US not to ask for extensions seems both reasonable and unsurprising . "
