| 773898 | 2009-05-14 20:46:00 | Hello. I have a Speedtouch 780 router that I have been succesfully using with my laptop through either wireless or wired. My flatmate has recently purchased a desktop with a wireless dongle. I installed the Netgear WG111v3 wireless dongle, setup the wireless connection and it initially connected but then both my laptop and the desktop were booted off the network. I rebooted the router and as soon as the desktop connected again same deal. I entered the router setup, dont think i changed anything, then tried the desktop again and all was good for two days. Now however the desktop refuses to talk to the router despite the netgear software saying its connected to the network. I've again checked the settings of the router and it is setup as: New stations are allowed (automatically) - as per yesterday. No changes have been made apart from restarting the desktop. The ip address is 169.254.133.169 (apipa?) so its not talking to the router. Would love some help please. I've tried setting up the network again in the Netgear software but again it says its connected to my network but it wont talk to the router (tried pinging the routrer, no reply) |

| 773901 | 2009-05-14 21:35:00 | 169.254.x.x is a self-assigned IP when the machine is a) set to automatically obtain an IP and b) is unable to contact a DHCP server. Try manually assigning it a relevant IP and see if that works (i.e. determine if the router is simply not handing out DHCP responses over the wireless interface). |

| 773902 | 2009-05-14 21:44:00 | are you using the netgear software to control the dongle and connect or are you using the windows wireless network thingy?? Ive had real bad experiences trying to get dongles to work with bundled software in the past, so i always just install the drivers and let windows control it and the problems usally go away :) |

I tried to take someones advice and use Windows instead of the device software however this was unsuccessful as Windows stated that the device was enabled but I could do little else. Instead I uninstalled then reinstalled Netgear dongle and bingo was back in business again. Several reboots and the device is still functioning as it should be, so all good. Dunno what the cause was, but thanks again people. |
